Update 8!

Queue:

___ (Dwarf Adopter) the Felid Wanderer
Kog Haltpast the Deep Dwarf Monk
Jill the Naga Wizard (Worshiping Nemelex)
___ the Troll Berserker

Welcome back to our Let's Play of Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup! This time, because I have some time, I might actually do two floors. Shocking idea, I know!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The customary "first peek" picture. This one reveals an orc, there might be a horde nearby.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I gather their attention by yowling (I love these little touches). Hopefully I can take them on one by one.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Pictured: Glorious carnage. Seems that there's no pack leader, that's good.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

...it had to be this, didn't it?

This is what's known as the gnoll castle vault. Inside that thing are at least twenty-five gnolls with polearms set out to kill me. I guess I can just bypass it, but I have a feeling that they'd spread out all over the level if I do so (I just know I'm going to kill myself here).

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Proof that gnolls are evil - they are allied with dogs. (Seriously, in seemingly every gnoll vault they show up with jackals or dogs of some kind.)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

In the process of killing our mortal enemies we gain a level. Trust me, there are going to be a lot of those coming if we clear this fortress.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I almost forgot that we gain a life every three levels! If we die, we'll be resurrected in a safer location, and be able to keep on killing. This is good, mark my words.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

After doing a lot of luring monsters into corridors to take them on one by one, I got hit to one HP and I retreated upstairs. We might see a lot of this.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

One gnoll takes me from 13 HP to 0...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

But did you forget my extra life? It may have cost us a level, but it's there.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Killing the kobold brings us right back up. Huh.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Did you know that felids leave their own corpse when they die? And that they can butcher it and eat it?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

... and then I died for real. I've learned my lesson, folks, don't mess around with gnolls  :(

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Take a good look at our boundless treasures.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Our ranking. Notice that we have the worst of all. But hey, it was a FeWn, you shouldn't have expected much of it.

Spoiler: Morgue File (click to show/hide)

Next up: Kog Haltpast the Deep Dwarf Monk.

Kog Haltpast the Deep Dwarf Monk
Jill the Naga Wizard (Worshiping Nemelex)
___ the Troll Berserker

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And so the next hero enters the Dungeon, Kog Haltpast, the Deep Dwarf Monk. Kog has trained for years for this moment, mastering the (totally not made-up) dwarven martial arts styles like the Unbreakable Mountain Form and the Hammer Fist of Stone, and given a wand of healing to heal himself in emergencies (since Deep Dwarves don't heal, but are maddeningly tough). Who better to undertake this journey? Also, he was adopted by Dwarf Adopter, and now comes in searching for his master. See? There are connections ??? He then uses his super-Deep Dwarf senses to partially reveal the layout of the dungeon. Handy.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

An amulet! This could be a great boon for us, we put it on.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Gourmand? Awesome! This allows us to stuff ourselves full with meat without having the carnivore mutation. HANDY. More so for spellcasters, but whatever. It's also not exactly a monk-like tradition, but whatever, this is Crawl.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We take three damage from a simple newt. I'm beginning to think this will be a rough ride...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Level 2! Also, look at how much damage I took. That's awful, I may need to burn a wand charge before I even meet anything halfway-threatening.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I burn a charge because of some kobolds. Usually, when I play DD's, I don't do so until my first unique. Yeah, this combination is that bad ::)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And then, because I am an idiot, I don't pay attention to my HP and I forget to burn a wand charge and I die. Yeah.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Our inventory, full of things that could have (but didn't) save us.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And our pitiful, pitiful ranking. I think I'm done with Crawl for today, folks, maybe I'll have some better luck (and stop streaking character deaths) tomorrow.

Spoiler: Morgue File (click to show/hide)

Next up, Jill the Naga Wizard.

Adding an Octopode Transmuter to the queue, so at least you'll have a character that sounds right. (I have no idea if an Octopode Transmuter is actually a good idea or not.)

I mean, I enjoy your pain.

Add a priest of Beogh to the bottom of the list, named Crawler's Bane.

Will we become Orc Jesus? Will Un67 go insane trying to fufill our absurd character requests? Find out, several episodes of this LP from now, unless these next few characters have the toughness of a broken paper mache fly, bulit at 1:1 scale.

^ There's already a Troll Berserker in the queue, I don't feel like repeating characters so soon.

Is it wrong that my first reaction to the vast majority of these species-profession combinations is [sarcastic]"Oh, that will end well for sure."[/sarcastic]?

Yeah, it's already in there. Just for clarity's sake, the current queue is:

Jill the Naga Wizard (Worshiping Nemelex)
___ the Troll Berserker
___ the Octopode Transmuter
___ the Orc Priest
___ the Draconian Crusader

Update 9!

Jill the Naga Wizard (Worshiping Nemelex)
___ the Troll Berserker
___ the Octopode Transmuter
___ the Orc Priest
___ the Draconian Crusader

So yeah, ignore what I said earlier, I'm doing another update today. Down this path lies madness, I know. But I'm bored as hell, so why not?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This is Jill, the Naga Wizard hoping to worship Nemelex. Despite what you may think, NaWz of Nemelex is not as gimped of a combination as it may seem. Nagas and Wizards go well together, since their bonuses and maluses do well to counteract each other. Nemelex happens to be a very good god if used properly (admittedly I've never used Nemelex properly), so it SHOULD be a good combination. Keyword: should.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Our wizard spells. We begin with Magic Dart memorized. Despite first appearances, this spellbook is VERY powerful, if lacking in direct damage.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

With some victory dancing, Conjurations skill increases. This is handy, as we always need more blasting power as wizards.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This is our first enemy, a giant cockroach.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It takes exactly five Magic Darts, one Poison Spit, and one punch to take it out. This could be a rough ride...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

A goblin goes down easier. Also, the dagger will be nice.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I find a leather armor and pick it up, not to wear it but to dump it onto a pile on the downward staircase with all the other junk on this level. Then, when I find an altar of Nemelex, I'll join him and then start going to all of my piles to offer my stuff for a big chunk of starting piety. Clever, eh?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Level 2! This is a good time to memorize some spells. Namely, Repel Missiles and Blink. Repel Missiles will help against projectile users from kobolds and their beloved enchanted darts to yaktaurs and their not-so-beloved bolts. Blink is just an awesome escape spell, you'll see it in action later.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Then while exploring I find a small goblin horde ready to kill me. This could be very bad...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I managed to blink away once but then I ran out of mana and they surrounded me. Curse you, Crawl. :-[

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Our "treasures", AKA things we saved so we could offer it to Nemelex.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Our ranking. Notice that it steadily decreases for each new character I make. This could be because I'm making more and more bad judgements, or because you guys are driving me insane. Personally, I prefer to believe the second :P

Spoiler: Morgue File (click to show/hide)

But never fear! Our new character, the Troll Berserker is here! And who knows, we might actually survive long enough to see the interesting parts of the game! Not in the mood to put that in this update, though. Apparently I'm still out of juice.
