Troll Leatherworker, Troll Pump Operator
« on: June 22, 2011, 03:28:08 pm »

So, I have an utterly bizarre situation in my fort. This is slightly modded DF. (no exotics; war rabbits and war giant badgers; extra reactions for free materials when I feel like cheating; I also used RuneSmith a little to genocide goblin ambushes earlier to get the fort set up.) I set up a magma flooding trap in my entrance, and bait goblins into it by tossing War Rabbits into the area. I had some trolls show up with a goblin siege, and in the (drawn out, they were being ineffective at killing) process of killing the rabbit, two of the trolls suddenly changed job into a Troll Leatherworker and a Troll Pump Operator, who were then afraid of my dwarves/pets and would run away instead of going for combat.
Has this happened to anyone else?

If the siege was retreating i guess their military status couldve gone inactive and made them civvies again... Can anyone confirm or am i talking nonsense?

If only you'd caught them, they'd still be around for...questioning.

In older versions, every troll who showed up would have a randomly generated job.  You'd get attacked by troll farmers and hunters and architects.  It's only been in the recent versions that they just show up as 'troll'.  I suspect there's something at play that suppresses their job title during the siege, and possibly when the siege broke they went back to being civilians and got their old titles back.

Reminds me of someone who added [CAN_LEARN] to cats.  He had a migrant Diagnostician Cat.

I had trolls develop "jobs" mid-siege.  A troll got in and pounded on a rabbit (that got away) and got the title "Animal Tamer"*.  So it can happen during the siege.  So it might be related to carrying out a non-combat related activity maybe to undo the supression?

*- This troll started toppling statues and then discovered that living and having a bronze sword stuck into your head repeatedly by a dwarf were not activities to carry out simultaneously.

I've had trolls turn up with jobs in .25.

Trolls do have [CAN_LEARN][SLOW_LEARNER].

I think it's the way towns develop now. In the beginning, people move into a town. Then they start producing tables, which results in more and more tables. Soon tables represent a significant portion of the population, they start lobbying for new laws and regulations, putting people to greater and greater disadvantage...

I did catch them, actually. Lured 'em into the cage traps with promises of breakable doors. I plan on questioning them inside the Giant War Badger pen.

Which is a good thing, otherwise I'd have to spend a couple of days to read through it all like I usually do.

Well, at least I was bored and had nothing to do before I learned of this.
