You might want to edit your title for accuracy, since you're still here.

Nice to see you F0lak. I don't think anyone was directing that at you, it's just a common reaction to fresh users posting in OG.
Eh, maybe I'm just too used to BYOND website community.  They tend to blame game creators for the players' actions.

So you're saying it's easier to build a house out in the wilderness somewhere and it respected, or not end up violating some island wide policy that ends up getting it burnt to the ground?
Totally.  As it stands there's one major kingdom headed by myself (The Kingdom of Settal - you might recognise it as an old Heritage) which was actually the first kingdom established in the game 5 or 6 years ago when we released.  From what I know most of the new players end up joining that for their first character.  Other than that there are a few Orc settlements up in the mountains, and I think (I'm not 100% sure) there's another human town popping up somewhere in the archipeliago.

Roleplay wise there are a few things we as admins are doing to enforce it.  First and foremost, deaths which occur in a roleplay event such as a fight or a quest to slay a monster are expected to result in the roleplay death of the character, and the player is expected to begin a new character.  We've also become more active in the community both as Aels and as characters ourselves.  This helps us not only to help catch ne'erdowells in the act, but we can take an active role in promoting positive and constructive roleplaying.

The game itself just underwent some pretty major internal changes to accomodate the new 24 hour seasons, so there are a few bumps we're still smoothing out.  Overall it's playable, but until the next patch (which I'm expecting out in a day or two) you'll find animals hard to come by on the mainland, as they currently procreate on a year-round basis.  This is being changed to be completely unrelated to the time of year, so they'll always be replenishing their populations.

As far as establishing yourself goes, subscribers now have the ability to create groups which can have custom flags and custom clothing colours, chosen by the person who created the group.  It's a pretty nice way to tell who's who.  As long as you aren't extirpating any locals from a place in which they've already settled there shouldn't be any issues with you establishing a settlement anywhere, really.  That isn't to say you can't extirpate the locals if you wanted to.  As long as it's roleplayed! ;)

The ire here tends to get directed at the poster. Devs promoting their products themselves here, tastefully, tends to go over much better.

@F0lak: You should really move beyond BYOND (;p). A game like this would have probably quite a few players if it wasn't stuck on that. I might fire up my BYOND account anyway and give it a try, especially if it gets some interest off other forum goers.

The game's been in development for over 5 years.  It's already got an established fan-base where it is, and in all honesty I don't really know any other languages other than enough to ace my C# classes.  I really don't mind BYOND's language other than some things being out of my control.  I don't see what people have against it, myself.

It's not so much the language as the requirement of downloading the BYOND client and pissing about with it. It's also fairly limited in what it can do. Also, the community. My god, the BYOND community.

I'm just thinking that a person like yourself, who is obviously dedicated and talented, should try a few languages, at least to play with for a short while.

If this game was out of byond, I do belive it would be huge, the problem is to make it good, as in byond you can easily wipe the world or reboot (I dunno how it works in other languages...)

I appended this to my previous post in an edit, but you guys replied too soon:

One idea is to use BYOND's 'exe' feature, which compiles the game along with BYOND and installs that in the background when the user runs the game for the first time.  I do believe BYOND runs in the background, but if I added a server-side database for login information then people would be free to use our own login information to connect to the game and save their information, as it currently doesn't save Guest keys.  But BYOND is necessary to play the game.

I have done a little in BYOND and did not like it at all. I do not remember what games I played (other than SS13) but I do remember it being super laggy and having messy controls.

Whether or not those issues were the fault of the server/developer doesn’t really matter. The BYOND system disappointed me and I don’t have a desire to try other BYOND games. Another issue is that people willing to give your game a shot, aren’t necessarily willing to go through a multi step install process.

All of that to say “Your game looks fun, but I don’t think I want to mess with BYOND again”. Hopefully some B12ers get back into it, because it is always nice to hear the stories.

I suggest C# & XNA with Network.Lidgren.

I already have a tile-engine with networking capability and some more features.

Well, like I said, if I were to get that exe capability of BYOND worked out, then the only thing people would have to do is download the game files and run them.  BYOND takes care of all of that in the background.

@head: I'd be willing to take a look at it and see how that goes.  It would definitely be a learning curve for me though.  What IDE's would I require?
