Author Topic: Hazordhu II-Minecraft-esque top-down sidescroller older than Minecraft itself  (Read 3990 times)

Hazordhu II is a pretty cool game for Byond that alot of B12ers used to play a while ago. They made a dwarven fortress, but it didn't last. I say we do that again. Dwarves are established in the setting, though not as an in game race. The game itself has alot of good roleplayers and active admins. You could make a kingdom, build a city, or go and be a bandit. There are almost no NPCs in the game, everything is player run. There are big cave systems just waiting to have fortresses built in them too. Play it here http://www.byond.com/games/F0lak/Hazordhu

Actually not older than DF :P DF started development in 2002.

Whatever. In the OOC Channel, F0lak, the owner of the game, said he will implement beer next update! Yay! He is already drawing the icons.

Nice response to a factual correction, passive aggressive dismissal. PS we don't like people who show up and immediately start plugging some project or other.

We already had a thread on this a while back, but it's been buried for a few months.

Hazordhu II was fun for a while, but once you explored the world and got sick of building all you had left was ArrPee and griefing. Trying to keep someone from wrecking your crap was a full time job in Hazordhu for us.

F0lak is a pretty nice guy though. I keep meaning to check back on what he's done since I last played. He even popped in to our thread I believe.

Sorry about that  :(, I just meant that the hazordhu series has been out longer than DF has been out. I probably should have clarified.  Anyway, I will be posting in other places too, I used to have an old account a while ago but it was banned :-[.

I actually joined the game once I found about it on the old thread. Anyway, the griefing is not nearly as bad as it was, since the admins are way more active now. That, and this wipe's RP is generally considered the best of any wipe.

Alot of updates happened, now there is an average of 20 people on, and the admins are pretty active so griefing going unpunished is very rare. That, and now since the spawn was moved to the mainland you do not have to spend an hour going to find someone. The RP was reset to the dawn of civilization, so there are no old grudges.

The probably was never with pure griefing. It's that the only RP that was worth a damn was conflict, and it's most visible form was hostility and breaking people's doors down and torching their shit. Half of Hazordhu, when you get involved in the RP, becomes trying to figure out along with the admins whether someone is RPing or just being a dick. The whole reason we ran into problems in that game was we made it clear we wanted to be left alone, which became a red flag for the whole 20 people in game to come and "see what's with the dwarves." And telling them to bugger off and let us build resulted in everyone and their dog trying to acquire our keys, or go ghosting through our base. In terms of the RP we wanted, it was at odds with how Hazordhu works. When Bay12 was making up half the population at one time, it was hard to keep to ourselves.

First off, I don't tell them to do this stuff.  I found out about this over the OOC channel in-game.  I'm just here to clear a few things up.
Second, Hazordhu isn't a side-scroller.  Terraria is.  Hazordhu is played from a top-down birds' eye perspective.

Anyways, the roleplay has taken a pretty big shift lately.  Players are forming groups together and actually playing roles in society.  We weeded out most of the "Let's go kill everyone who opposes us" players, and large-scale conflicts are pretty rare.  We've also implemented several features which serve to help with the roleplay and keep things fair, such as the PDB (active defense) system for combat accompanied by the new rules associated with PvP conflict.

Since the last Bay12 players were around the game has just undergone a series of content updates.  It still plays the same overall.

Nice to see you F0lak. I don't think anyone was directing that at you, it's just a common reaction to fresh users posting in OG.

And FWIW, the problems we had did stem directly from RP style, which was brusque to say the least. That and the size of our group naturally created some waves with the established players.

So you're saying it's easier to build a house out in the wilderness somewhere and it respected, or not end up violating some island wide policy that ends up getting it burnt to the ground? I may have to come back and putz around again.

Oh this is that game that I thought was Haven and Hearth's extremely basic origins.  I guess it was actually a separate game entirely.  Still I couldn't stand the eventual tedium of farming in H&H so I doubt I'd be playing this.  (FYI I'm sure it is indeed different but yeah I totally thought they were the same game.)

Farming for yourself is fairly minor. Farming to support a whole community, on the other hand, can be quite an endeavor.

Well actually seasons last 24 hours now. F0lak will be making seeds easier to get, though, so people can actually farm.
