Unable to play
« on: June 22, 2011, 01:46:39 am »

Alright, so I just found Dwarf Fortress by reading the TvTropes page, and I'm really excited to try it out. I was stunned at the small size of the game during download, and installed it right away, alongside a couple of mods.

It didn't work, telling me I needed to upgrade my GPU.

So, I update my GPU

Still nothing.

So I uninstalled everything, redownload, set it up again, all that jazz, but no mods this time - just vanilla DF.

Still won't work. The issue this time is, every time I try to turn the game on it says "The procedure entry point DecodePointer could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll"

Can anybody help me?

I'm not sure exactly what you're doing, but here's what I did:

1. Download file for Windows (if you're Mac I can't help you)
2. Open with WINRAR
3. Create desktop folder called "Dwarf Fortress"
4. Highlight everything in the RAR
5. Drag everything down to "Dwarf Fortress"
6. Open "Dwarf Fortress"
7. Click the icon with the little dwarf face

If that doesn't start the game, I'm not sure what to tell you. It's something with either your computer or your download if those steps don't work

Try without mods first.

I've done so, twice now. no mods, downloaded from different mirrors. It's apparently something wrong with my computer, but I have no idea what the thing means

Have you tried older version? It might be your computer's OS isn't updated to current, or it don't have the library needed to run some parts of current version of DF.

Google tells me you require Service Pack 2, or failing that, a windows installation repair. I've been on win7 for a while so I couldn't tell you how to do that, but google might help.

Darkmere beat me...
Considering the Google results for the error message you posted you haven't even installed service pack 2 or later on your XP machine. Are you honestly still running XP SP1?

Sounds like you're running a pirated edition of Windows, if it's not updating automatically. In which case, getting an upgrade will probably be quite easy.

There exists a hacked version of Windows XP that has been optimized to be extremely thin and patched to block all (I think) security loopholes XP had. It's called TinyXP, but it's illegal, needless to say. Use it at your own risk, or even better, use a legal operating system.

Or someone that's got auto-update disabled, like me. I tend to disable it due to it keep either resetting my computer in middle of things, or it just being pop-up happy. I've sometimes went months or years without bothering to manually update on Windows machines  :-[

Requires at least XP SP2, Vista, or 7. That's what I get from a google search. Updade to SP2 and you should be fine.

No, upgrade to SP3 and all patches after that. We don't need another Windows zombie PC that spreads spam etc. An unpatched Windows is dangerous.
I don't care if it is pirated. But XP can be easily copied and it still gets all updates and no ones will ever find out. But if it is a copy, you might want to consider Windows 7 which is really nice and it doesn't cost a lot.

I've run it on everything from a pentium 3 running ungenuine XP and a beat up geforce2, to a phenom on win7, and never had any problem. If your copy of XP won't update beyond sp1 then you pirated it wrong. ;p

Why are you running XP anyway, in 2011?
