Trade liason always gets trapped
« on: November 10, 2007, 10:54:00 pm »

Since the new version EVERY single time the dwarf liason visits me, he always stays behind and shortly will either go bezerk or just get very sad and mope around my fort.  I've not once had him actually leave, and I've played coutless forts.

They're all quite straight forward forts with nothing but some normal doors and stairs between him and the exit.

I also notice that immigrants spend almost a season standing at the edge of the map where they spawn with a flashing X over them untill they finally figure out how to enter my fort.

I'm not builing them strangly.  Just a shaft down of stairs though the non-rock layers untill you reach my fort.  No fancy floodgates or drawbridges, sometimes not even doors!  Yet without fail, this poor diplomat always seems to get stuck. I've had to take to always bringing dedicated combat dwarf on every new fort to help show the diplomat the way out after he goes insane and starts trying to kill everyone.

I've been having this problem as well, I was wondering if it is to do with the diplomat not managing to conduct a meeting with the mayor before their caravan leaves.

I had a successful diplomacy in one fort where the outpost leader was my miner (and no mining tasks during the time the caravan was there)

Since there is an announcement that a diplomat has left unhappy, its probably intended that he should leave with the caravan if the meeting didn't happen.

My outpost leader finished talking with the liaison before the caravan left, and they still went and left without the liaison. I don't know what's going on, but now I'm just cheating to get rid of the liaison when the caravan leaves.

it has to do with stairs. liaisons seem incapable of using them once theyve finished their meetings. if you go through the bug forum you will find this mentioned repeatedly.

just make sure your noble meets with the liaison on ground level and you should be fine(ive never had a problem this way)

I think someone posted this elsewhere - the trick is to disable all labors on your Broker/Expedition Leader dwarf, to make sure he has time to meet with the Liason.  If you do that, he should be able to get through all the agreement screens and leave successfully.

Just use the teleport.exe utility to zap the liaison up to ground level after the meeting is over.

Yep it's the stairs alright. Maybe also doors but I think not.
What I do now is: as soon as the caravan arrives, I draft my mayor into the military. That way he cannot do any other job than meeting with the diplomat, eating, drinking and sleeping.
To avoid the stairs, I station my military mayor outside. That way the diplomat doesn't have to walk stairs.
It's not 100% failproof, but at least it works most of the time. For even better succes rate, give the mayor outside quarters, dining room and food stockpile with favourite food and drink.
