All I did was set him to military and tell him to use a shield. The only strange thing about the scenario is that all of the excess shields he has equipped were from a human caravan that was wiped out.

That may well be the single most appropriate coupling of a dwarf's name with their bug, ever.

Well, at least in Adventurer mode you can hold multiple objects with the same hand.  For instance, if you have a sword and shield out and you say to pull something out of your pack, you can have that in your right hand along with the sword.

This can also be done as an adventurer, by removing things from your backpack.

Also: shouldn't shields be equipped to the lower arm, not the hand?

The shield bug has been reported a couple of times, but I have no ideas yet.
