Going to minetown or sokoban first really depends on your class.  Dorfs and Gnomes can probably get away with it because the monsters will be peaceful.

Dorf Valkyries are the easiest class, although knights are pretty easy too if you know what you're doing.

Silver Dragon Scale Mail is totally the way to go.  There are a bunch of useful amulets other than reflection, but the cloak selection isn't quite as great.

Displacement, while great, isn't really that necessary. Amulets of life saving though, on the other hand...

Gray dragon scale mail can be good if you have a source of reflection. With that being said, there are a ton of sources for magic resistance.

Silver dragon scale mail allows you to wear an Amulet o Life Saving, and a Cloak of Magic Resistance.

At least, those two are the bare minimum.

If you're a monk in vanilla however...

Cloak of magic resistance, amulet of reflection, massive caution (GLOVES).

While silver d-scale is better for an optimal gear set, if I get an early fountain wish I go for gray d-scale. I don't know when I'll get another, and with gray d-scale I get great AC and magic resistance in one go, which are more important than reflection for the early areas (poly/magic traps in the mines, liches in castle).

True. Gray scale is great, when obtained early game, due to the huge AC boost and magic resistance, unless you're a wizard or you found it in a bones level, you probably don't and won't have it until a few levels or so.

But if you still don't have a dragon scale armor by the time silver dragons get regular, you might as well switch to silver, unless you have a huge string of bad luck (no suitable items).

I just started playing, and i have to ask, if I walk into an object, will it always pick it up? It's annoying...

Autopickup can be turned off with @. I suggest you do, otherwise certain gray stones will give you some trouble.

I got lucky with an early wand of wishing and some magic lamps when I ascended. A blessed amulet of life saving and at least 1 wand of wishing are two contingencies you should always have. Of course, I was a wizard who knew Identify, so it made it easy to figure out how many charges there were.

Personally, my build is Gnome Wizard, which works wonders if you start with a good spellbook and rings.

Also you can configure what you autopickup in the config file (\<Nethack folder>\defaults.nh) - it's just a text file. Look for this line:

OPTIONS=autopickup,pickup_types:$"=/!?+

which means you will autopickup gold, amulets, rings, wands, potions, scrolls and spellbooks.

Comment it with a #, and replace it with your preference. Mine is:

OPTIONS=autopickup,pickup_types:$

which means I only autopickup gold.

Once set all new characters created with use that settings. To change it for your current game, press O for options.

That'll happen.

Nethack is a game that HATES it's players.

But you'll play it anyway, whether it's now or later, until you finish it at least once. It's one of those games.

Tarran has the "Tarran Bug", a bug which causes the affected character to repeatedly hit teammates while dual-wielding instead of whatever the hell he is shooting at.

It's theoretically possible to die on turn 1. For example, you fall into a spiked pit. The spikes were poisoned! The poison was deadly...

Falling rock trap will do the trick too, for low HP characters. Or kill your pet when you rely on it to fight for you.

Don't worry though, you'll get raped by giant ants next, then killer bees, then soldier ants.

Here's a tip though:

A sharp object you won't need in combat, as engraving without an athame dulls blades.

A wand of digging will do the same thing.
