Random Tips from a mediocre Nethack player:

- Eat everything you can and learn what gives you fatal food poisoning and what gives you super powers.  (floating eyes, tengu and liches are yum!)
- Never hold down the walk key.  You WILL run into something that will kill you.
- Keep a ring of levitation handy.  I lost my best game because I didn't have one.
- Some classes are significantly harder than others.  Valkyrie is an easy one to play I find.
- Its sometimes worth it to camp out at an Alter and sacrifice as many random monsters as you can.  The artifact weapons you can find are often quite powerful.

Don't Tengu give teleportis? Also, what do I do if i'm cornered by something I know I can't beat?

Semi off topic, but still related in a roguelike variant way.

Easiest class for SLASH'EM is Monk.

I think they give teleport control, unless I'm remembering wrong.  Maybe its a random chance of either.  :)

Its good to keep some emergency items for when you are in trouble.  I tend to try to keep a wand of digging handy, so I can destroy the floor underneath me and escape from danger.  If you are completely screwed and you know it, its sometimes worth trying to pray.  The god MIGHT save you by healing you, but it tends to be pretty risky so I use it as a last resort(also can occasionally save you from starvation).

Tengu give both Teleport Control and Teleportitis. Always have a backup countermeasure ready.

Difficulty varies between classes. There are some easy earlygames and hard endgames, and there are hard earlygames and easy endgames.

Choose whatever you prefer.

Here's a list from the wiki:

Why hello.

I just started playing Nethack several days ago, and I gotta say it's one tough game! I was hoping there'd be a recent Nethack thread here, and here it is!

My best characters so far have been a male human knight and a male elf wizard. I've died every time I reach Minetown, though. It seems like there are a ton of enemies inside the town, and the guards just ignore them!

Anybody got any tips on this?

Tengu give both Teleport Control and Teleportitis. Always have a backup countermeasure ready.

They have a slightly higher chance of giving Teleportitis than Teleport Control. So people usually tin a few tengus and eat them all at once. Or get a few tins of tengu, get Teleportitis first (say from a nymph), then eat the tins.

I'd say the Gnomish Mines are a dev team trap. On and past Mine Town nasty traps (particularly polymorph) can show up. You either got morphed into a wimpy rat or encounter out-of-depth monsters. Then there's deadly poison spike trap (which can appear before mine town), followed by gnomes with wands. So I always do Sokoban before mines (just move quickly on Oracle level, which usually contains tougher monsters for your level, like ants, bees and rothes).

- If you have the patience for pets, let them fight for you before mines, and they will be able to help in the mines. Defuse boulder traps for them.
- Being a dwarf or gnome will greatly reduce the amount of enemies. You might then have trouble with food however.
- Search for traps! Search twice every step.

Your first trip should be to Sokoban (which is another branch within the Dungeons of Doom). IIRC, it's somewhere in DLVL 9.

Why should you go to sokoban? Sokoban has a ton of good stuff, like wands, food, amulets and rings, not to mention the prize for completing it, which is either an AoR (amulet of reflection) or a bag of holding.

The amulet of reflection will save your hide against beam like magic, like magic missile, and the bag of holding will increase your carrying space.

Next, you'll want to go to Mine's End, which can be found at the bottom of the Gnomish Mines.

There's a certain stone to be had there.

Are the guards in Minetown supposed to flip their shit if you dip in the fountains and get Excalibur?

Yes. They get angry when you dry up a fountain; Exe does it in one go.
