I can't find a water source -- I have a brook.
« on: June 21, 2011, 12:57:41 pm »

Hello, all! This is my first map. I was following the game play of a YouTube user named 51ppycup, and it was really helpful. However, I decided to try to experiment, and then I got a notice saying there are no drinks. So, I look up water source, and I notice I have a brook. However, I cannot use it as a water source! I searched the forums a bit and could not find anything that helps. The brook is actually 1 z-level under normal ground. However, I have this picture...

When I go to press 'i' for zone, the 'Water Source' is completely grayed and has (0) after. I could use some help on this one, guys.

As you can tell, I tried to channel it, I tried digging and making a plateau, and I even tried making the zone on the Z-level above the brook where the normal ground is.

PS: I have a series of Murky Pools, but I cannot use those as water sources either. :\

If the water source designation over the water don't works, that means the water's salty. You have to either make a well to trick them into drinking it, or build a box aboveground that get pumped in for the water.

To get pure water, every surface that you're planning to pump water in must be constructed, including under the pumphead, otherwise it'll go salty again.

Guessing you embarked on or near an ocean, and your brook is considered salty.

Best thing to do is quickly build a water pump next to the brook to pump water into a completely constructed room (walls and floors).
Salty is created by water touching a natural ground tile (walls or floors) and infects all other water it comes into contact with.

Um, actually.

That may not be the case at all the water being salty. Brooks have a sort of "floor" over them - try channelling a small hole to one side of the brook and setting the water source zone there. If that doesn't work, then yes, your water is salty.

Keep in mind that water sources have to go on tails adjacent to the *top* of the water. That is, tiles above and adjacent to the water itself.

The floor acts like grates/bars which let you set up drinking/fishing zones.

I can't seem to figure out how to make a pump. :\
http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Screw_pump
http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Cistern

So you must build flored room (b)(shitf+c)(f) and build walls (b)(shift+c)(w). After than your carpenter must build enormous corkscrew, a block, and a pipe section. Enormous corkscrew and pipes are on last screen in carpenter products (in his workshop). After that, you can find screw pump on (b)(shift+m)(s). You must designate turn by keys showed in build menu. You must wait for Architect and for Carpenter. If you build it you can turn on it by (q), tracking pump with you X, and pressing Enter to start. Next you dwarf with Pump operator labor go there and start pumping.

Warning: Dwarfs are pumping very fast! :) In short time this small creatures can transfer a lot of water by pump!

Grates and the like don't stops the drinking if it's right above water, brooks have something 'like' a grate on top of it. I've never had problem with zone designation for fishing and drinking on top of brooks, outside of the salty one, which indeed does show 0 water source no matter what.

You could always just dig down into the caverns and use an underground water source.

AFAIK, cavern water is fresh.

If you draw water directly out of a cavern pool it will be laced with mud because of the piles of mud on the floors of the pool.  Fortunately, just draining the pool into a cistern will solve the problem without having to use a pump, since the piles of mud stay in place.

Dwarves do not consider water a proper drink and will almost die of thirst before settling for it. Make alcohol or watch your fortress degenerate into misery and inefficiency.
Wounded dwarves will only drink water tough.

Also, make/import more than one type of booze! Dwarves may get fed up (or rather, drunk up) with a particular type of booze if they have to drink it too often.
