That's really my biggest problem with modern military sims: as niche as they are, they're often so expensive I can't ever justify the cost. I guess the first-person variants are cheaper, just tough on hardware requirements.

I spend my time with the Harpoon series (grew up with Harpoon Classic before I joined the real deal), Hearts of Iron III, the Silent Hunter series ...

Would like to try ARMA II, may demo it to see if it will run okay on my slightly upgraded machine. Would also like to try Advanced Tactics: Gold, but can't afford it and there's no demo.

Might give Conquest of the Aegean a try, it looks REALLY familiar to me but I'm sure I've never played it.

Then again, I consider Infinity to be overly ambitious, something that might easily spell it's downfall.

I enjoyed the Conquest of the Aegean and would like to try Command Ops: Battles from the Bulge. Actually it has also gotten cheaper; now 45 dollars for digital download edition... Still bit too much. I wonder how good it sold with the original prize, which was 80 dollars!
I think these games focus mainly on an older public, kind of like model trains. As such, they're in a market that tends to have slightly more cash to burn. Hell, there are enough people who collect Harley Davidson or old-timers, so shelling out 80 dollars for a high quality simulation may not be that strange for people interested in that.

Plus, you have to do tons of research and data entry or you get people trashing you. Also, there is a decent government market for this kind of thing.

I can't really afford $80 for War in the Pacific, so I... erm... "demoed" it. I tried the small Coral Sea Scenario. I loved the gameplay for the smaller scenario, as I'm now starting to read stuff about the Pacific Theatre in WWII - however, I definitely cannot see myself playing a larger scenario. I'm not sure that you control any other countries except the USA, but commanding 2 carrier task forces (one carrier each), half a dozen submarines, and a couple airbases in a very limited region took a longish amount of time already. I cannot even begin to imagine doing that Pacific-wide, having to deal with research, production, long-term effects, attrition, etc...

I must be absolutely epic (that's exactly the right word), if you have the time and the patience. Unfortunately, I find that I don't, and I'm very sad about that. It's definitely true about the interface... it's not fighting you, but doesn't help you one bit. Setting up patrols should be as easy as clicking one button, then drawing an arc. Instead, you half to open 2 to 3 different screens, click on half a dozen dials, repeat it over and over... lots of this stuff could be automated/"subcontracted to AI" and perhaps then finetuned by you.

I'm definitely in love with the whole carrier thing. Will probably be getting Midway: Naval Campaigns for $30 - which is super cheap compared to the regular prices on these things. If anyone has any more suggestions, I'd be happy to hear them.

If you're into WWII flight sims, the new IL2 Sturmovik came out recently, Cliffs of Dover. Even though it's plagued by performance issues for some people, it's a whole new ball-game. It's really hard to go back to IL2 '46 after using complex engine management in CoD... :) I'm keeping my eye on this thread :)

Mud 'n' Blood 2.
No.

I would say ArmA 2, but it runs horribly on my 2010-built computer.

That's probably because it's one of, if not the most demanding game on the market right now, mostly due to it hitting hard on the processor where other games don't.  Framerates around 25-35 are normal on a new machine...what's "horrible" in your case?

At any rate, I'll highly recommend it.  There's no other combined arms simulator out right now that can touch it, IMO.

I played it for awhile in public servers, in coop. It did tend to feel a bit of the same after awhile. Everybody gets taken by chopper, stays in the hills looking down on the village, hides behind rocks, and tries not to get sniped by someone with an automatic MG from two miles away.

How do you guys play it?

Me and my mates, roll up into the village in a HMV, he'll cover the road with the HMG while we sweep up each side of the streets.

Bigger game? I'll stay back and point out targets and friendlys while they pick their way through.

Up against enemy vehicles? Depends on how we want to take it out. The beauty of Arma is that theirs no real set way to handle a scenario.

I really haven't done much other than Warfare mode.  Two teams, each with a high commander, goal is to destroy the other team's mobile HQ.  Bases are built from supplies taken from holding territory.  I haven't seen it get stale yet, since you can approach the scenario in nearly any way, as long as you can surprise your opponent.

There's a free version of ARMA 2 coming out within the next month! It is lower texture res and no mods, but otherwise you should be able to get a good feel for the online and such.

Today's training with my tactical unit was a lot of fun, we did a single fireteam mission against 2 full platoons in one of the nicer cities of Lingor island. Did pretty well too :D

I was wrong, it's not only a patch as you don't need OFP to be installed, in fact it is the full OFP game with the Resistance campaign and content (but not the Codemasters content like Red Hammer) that you can install with your OFP serial.

Great way to back up this game if you fear your OFP and Resistance CD will soon become unreadable.

They released 2 hotfixes (one today) that fixed some problems in the config files, but will release soon a new full installer with hotfixes integrated.

This Arma : Cold War Assault (they changed the name of their OFP, as the name is always owned by Codemaster) works great with OFP mods and addons, so if you've got an OFP serial, get CWA.

I get around 25-30 while on the Takistan map, while I get around 15-25 on the Chernarus map.
That really sucks because Chernarus is the better map in my opinion.

Anyway, ArmA II is now free. Well, free as in you can play online, and some scenario missions with no mod support, but you can at least play it.
