military sims
« on: June 21, 2011, 09:36:14 am »

Im looking at military sims and thought i'd tap in to bay12's opinions. Shrapnel Games, Matrix games, Battlefront.com and possibly Paradox game all publish a quite extensive list of hardcore military sims for different eras. Ive only ever played titles such as Combat missions, and Hearts of Iron 2 (reasonably hardcore i suppose). I really love combat missions, could get in to HI2 or Victoria 2 as much as i would have liked.

What military sims have you played? Are they any good? Have you played any of the games ive linked below
im probs going to try the demos for
BCT Commander
http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ProSIM/BCT/BCT_page.html

Tacops
http://www.battlefront.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=114&Itemid=164

comand ops http://www.matrixgames.com/store/377/Command.Ops:.Battles.from.the.Bulge.

Airbourne assualt Conquest of the Aegean (or highway to the Reich)
http://www.matrixgames.com/store/313/Conquest.of.the.Aegean

but i will also consider hex games, or fleet game such as War in the pacific (matrix games)

Matix games dont do demos (also matrix charge alot for their games comparativly) so any experienceof these games would be good to hear.

Also use this thread to discuss the genre

WitP is a monster Wargame. It has some automation tools, but I think it's fair to say that it's meant to be played by people who like micromanagement. It's also definitely a game where way more effort was put into the engine than the graphics; I wouldn't say the GUI fights you, but it doesn't do a lot to help you, either.

Overall, I enjoy it, though I find it difficult to keep momentum going for playing a full war scenario.

Give a try to :

It's freeware, the dev is always improving it at each releases. It has a lot of potential.

The Airborne Assault and Command Ops series are very interesting because they are sort of the opposite of games like War in the East/Pacific.

You give basic orders like "Take this town by xx:hr be very aggressive. And then your HQ units will go ahead and send the orders down to their own subordinates and so on. You can take control of units farther down the command chain, but it clogs up the comms if you send too many orders. And it takes time for them to react.

Like you said, the games are very expensive. But Battles for the Bulge (considered the latest and greatest in terms of AI does have a demo. here

If you like the Combat Mission series I would give Achtung Panzer a try. It's set on the eastern front and platoon/company level like CM. It has a very detailed ballistic model and you can see on the models where shots penetrated (unlike CM) The game also has a strategic campaign where you have to control victory points, resupply your men/vehicles and rotate out soldiers that are too weary. They'll also gain experience and get medals.

The battle of the bulge one looks interesting, but quite a few others of these do as well, I think I like the idea of more close combat instead of that of say hearts of iron

Well, Aurora has a lot of stuff built around the military aspect of it. Finding enemies, however, may be hard.

my monitor isnt big enough for aurora, other wise i'd be playing it. Ive had a look at the prosim/shrapnel game demos. Its not bad, but i dont really have a comparator yet, demoing tacops4 tomorrow. The main thing that puts me off the prosim games is the price tag, BCT commander aint too shabby at $19, but the more attractive falklands game is more than $40. For a game that is essentially a bunch of logos moving round in visual basic this is quite alot. ontop of this both only come less than 20 missions.

Well, I think there is an option to make the window smaller (I don't remember if it was to make it shorter or thinner), if not you might be able to make your resolution high enough to fit it. If that fails, you can go buy yourself a cheap monitor of a decent size.

No.

I would say ArmA 2, but it runs horribly on my 2010-built computer.

I enjoyed the Conquest of the Aegean and would like to try Command Ops: Battles from the Bulge. Actually it has also gotten cheaper; now 45 dollars for digital download edition... Still bit too much. I wonder how good it sold with the original prize, which was 80 dollars!
