Im looking at military sims and thought i'd tap in to bay12's opinions. Shrapnel Games, Matrix games, Battlefront.com and possibly Paradox game all publish a quite extensive list of hardcore military sims for different eras. Ive only ever played titles such as Combat missions, and Hearts of Iron 2 (reasonably hardcore i suppose). I really love combat missions, could get in to HI2 or Victoria 2 as much as i would have liked.

What military sims have you played? Are they any good? Have you played any of the games ive linked below
im probs going to try the demos for
BCT Commander
http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ProSIM/BCT/BCT_page.html

Tacops
http://www.battlefront.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=114&Itemid=164

comand ops http://www.matrixgames.com/store/377/Command.Ops:.Battles.from.the.Bulge.

Airbourne assualt Conquest of the Aegean (or highway to the Reich)
http://www.matrixgames.com/store/313/Conquest.of.the.Aegean

but i will also consider hex games, or fleet game such as War in the pacific (matrix games)

Matix games dont do demos (also matrix charge alot for their games comparatively) so any experienceof these games would be good to hear.

Also use this thread to discuss the genre

Being a matrix games fanboi, I can say the best game here is Conquest of the Aegean, and its follow on games from the engine.
However as military sims go, these aren't really the best choices.
Norm Krogers: The Operational Art of War I strongly recommend. Combat mission 1-ALL I recommend.
I've played the prosim ones, they are resonable. They are however little more than graphical enhancements to the previous games in that longgggg line of games.
TacOps I wouldn't recommend, partially because I bought it from battlefront and can no longer download it  :P also because its generically the same as the Prosim games and all the rest. Nothing unique or superior - except the price. But with Tacops there is a worse issue - The AI is nonexistant. OK for multiplayer, not so much for singleplayer.

If I would get one Combat Mission game, what would you recommend?

of the original 3 game barbarosa to berlin, but imo look round on ebay and search amazon for older boxed copies going cheap before buying straight from battlefront. I got the combat missions anthology for about £5 a few years ago. I haave played shockforce, its alright, havnt played either of its expansions or the newer world war 2 one.

Deadmeat thanx for the tip, im going to get conquest of the aegean, and at some point i will probably get one of the prosim game. I had a look at the tacops demo, and wasnt that impressed. The maps didnt appear to have contours on and everything appeared to be simplified, but perhaps i want reading it right. Ill check out operational art of war

downloaded this freeware global naval combat sim game, gona give it a spin, looks like it might keep me occupied for some time (added it to free game thread to)

also this game looks very ambitious and should be awsome when released

http://www.warfaresims.com/?page_id=1101
is it only naval and air? or is there land too?

Global conflict blue is air and naval only, the other (currently in private beta) game red pill/command will do land operations as well as air and sea.

@ Deadmeat operational art of war 2 is available for 50p plus postage on amazon, version 3 costs £27 from matrix games. Is 3 much better than 2. Having read a review i know that 3 is tweeked for modern OS systems, 2 is 95 / 98 game. Do you know if it will run in compatability mode, or does it need DOSBOX?

I get around 25-30 while on the Takistan map, while I get around 15-25 on the Chernarus map.
That really sucks because Chernarus is the better map in my opinion.

Anyway, ArmA II is now free. Well, free as in you can play online, and some scenario missions with no mod support, but you can at least play it.

I've been told anything above 15 is decent for Arma 2, although I've heard Operation Arrowhead cleaned things up and ran a bit smoother.  I think part of the reason is that the chokepoint for Arma is the processor...full physics and ballistic simulation for maps massively larger than other games hits pretty hard.  A computer with a beast GPU that peaks out most other benchmarks can still have trouble.

I haven't played the Takistan map, is that an OA map?

Yeap, it's the OA map. Takistan has the advantage of being a rather empty desert. There's no massive forests, which does help with the FPS :) They're not really that bad, but you can't expect to run maximum detail, which is what I find people insist on using. I've always ran these things on oldish laptops, and they do OK (20-30 fps mostly) on low/medium settings and 1280x720.

So many interesting games... I sure wish I wasn't on a budget... I actually ordered Naval Campaigns: Midway for $30 off Amazon. There's only one review I could find, seemed interesting, real-time, etc. Hopefully the UI is better than War in the Pacific, and I am absurdly into WWII carrier warfare right now. I'll let you guys know how it is once it arrives :)

Coming in the beginning of July is the much anticipated Panzer Corps, a spiritual successor to Panzer General.

I am in the Beta currently, I will just say that this game is much fun.

You have all the attention to detail, but with an approachable engine.

If you are  a fan of Panzer General it is a definite buy, and if you are new to the hard core wargaming genre it is the perfect entry game.
