I literally just learned about this.  I feel like an idiot.

How to? (default keystrokes preferrably)

Well...clothing is a bit bugged, so civilians will claim clothes but never wear them, only wearing whatever they came with until it rots away.  Military you can give clothes by type (e.g.) cloaks and they will change outfits when the old ones wear out.  So either make everyone military and assign cloaks/pants/mittens via the uniform menu (m-e-scroll to soldier-select body part--select item), or pretend the beards keep 'em decent, like I do.

Like, assigning clothing as a military uniform?  Have you done uniforms before?

You can use inactive squad to dress up your dwarves, using the military to draft them in. They won't do military things if inactive, but they'll uniform up ( with exception of waterskin/flask and backpack, in my experience ) It won't work on woodcutter, miners, nor hunters.

No. You have to have them enlisted permanently.

Unfortunately, no, they don't technically 'own' their uniform. They'll drop the stuff and put it back in stock and be back to freeballing.

I really wish this bug would get fixed soon. In my current fortress I have a 12x12 stockpile of binned clothing and 250 dwarves in rags (if they're lucky).

All my dwarves have their own room with a cabinet and a chest, so it's not like they've no place to put their new duds.

So processing plants, weaving cloth and making clothes is completely useless?
I tried to sell clothes, but their value is low

It's actually pretty good value, if you're not doing much metalwork, have steady farm running and free hands to haul things. Dyes helps a lot.

Even base cloth rope have value of 60, more than a bronze chain and lighter. It get multiplied by quality of cloth as decoration and quality of rope itself. Dyes have quality level too if you're going that far. A masterwork rope with masterwork dye ( all but hide root, which's only value 10, compared to others of 20 ) and masterwork cloth goes for... 740 dorfbux total, I believes, if you're bothering to go that far and have legendary weaver, clothier and dyer ( it'll most likely be in range of 500 and up with varying quality ).

That said, doing such's more a hobby for me with how productive animal husbandry is with totems and hoof crafts  :D

Better with silk, but I still enjoy plant processing as well.

You can assign uniforms/clothing to them. Assign all non woodcutters, miners, and hunters to a squad. DO NOT assign them food. Assign the uniform you want them to wear. DO NOT assign them a barracks.
When ready, give the squad a move order, they should them rush to put on their new clothes, and meet at the spot. Then cancel the move order. From now on will replace clothing when it wears out, and get new duds. The only drawback is that if you have a large population, you might get confused trying to give orders to your real fighting squads, from a long list of squads

Should you fail to comply, strict !!disciplinary actions!! will be taken. Also, we feel we should remind you that one of the "criminals" on your list is the chief medical dwarf. If he ends up too badly injured to do his job, you will be fired. Out of a magma cannon.
Sincerely,
The Administration

Explain to me again the bug with assigning uniforms to miners, woodcutters, and hunters?

I like Fredd's idea, especially since I could incorporate it into a "This is SPARTA!!!"-themed fortress where all adult dwarves are armed and have basic military training. Still be nice to have this bug fixed however.

The bug is their 'working' uniform, assigned by the job they does, overrides the 'assigned' uniform from the military screen. I've heard of work-around for it, but as far as I'm concerned it's pointless to dress them up with how difficult it is. You don't need hunters anyway, military can take care of the job. Miners shouldn't be under threat as long as they're just tunneling and digging ( somewhere OUT of caverns ). You can make underground tree farms which are safe for woodcutters.

I appreciate the help, but apparently what I wanted to do was impossible =P

I wanted to assign certain items to certain dwarves to wear, without it having to be a uniform (EG: More important the dwarf, the more protective the clothing)
