Two Questions in dire need of answer.

Question one: How do i make a hole in the ground that goes to the next Z-Level below? Like, when you build a room, with walls. the inside of the upper floor is empty space, venturing there would make a dwarf fall. and hit himself. on the floor, unless he dodges the floor and continues flying in a dramatic Zig-Zag pattern.

Question two: where is a WRITTEN tutorial i can look up? it needs to have more than just the basics of the game on it.

1: Designate a channel, that punches a hole down. To make dwarves fall you need a building that opens up under them, like bridge, hatch, or floor bars. Bridge might work since they throws things around.

2: Not a tutorial, but a wiki http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Main_Page it does have a few tutorials or pointers around there.

Answer 1: Try channeling.

Answer 2: Lol, you must have forgotten what game you're playing.  Cpt'n Duck on youtube is a good place to start.

Don't use tutorials.  Now, this way requires a high IQ, but it REALLY pays off, and is so much easier.

Explore commands, try to do as much as you can.  If after 20-30 minutes you are GENUINELY stuck, then look at the wiki/ask here how to progress.  Rinse and repeat until you learn everything survive for more than a year think you know how to play, then get proved wrong again.

Agreed that you should read the magmawiki. It helps a lot. Other than that explore the different key commands and learn/experiment.

remember if you use channel to actually remove the Up ramp.
you go down one level where the V become ^ and thenyou remove it through designation.
otherwise, it's not falling.

Unless you channel a 3x3 area, then the center ramp becomes empty space...

Part of the !FUN!  of DF is discovering things yourself and inventing new ways to do something, or on occasion discovering that you know how to do things others didn't know were possible.

I frequently assist newer players in the forums.  I'm also frequently incorrect about some of the more complex aspects of the game, and generally avoid the 2010 military as much as possible.  However, recently I discovered that a lot of the other experienced people here were not aware that it was possible to carve fortifications into a constructed wall.  But last night I was introduced to a very clever method of breaking through an aquifier.  It's give and take here, even amongst some of the most experienced players.

pray tell, what is this way of breaking through an aquifer?

knowing me, I've probably found new ways of doing multiple things in DF, but I thought they were already discovered.
knowing me, that is.

it's...complicated.
a mix of stairs and pumps.
personally, if i'd ever embark in an acquifer zone, i'd wait winter, breach it losing miners to the ice and proceed down as fast as hell.

It's not that bad if you're prepared. Aquifers can be drained into themselves, so if you build pumps all along the edge of your aquifer area, and have them pump into a channeled square on the other side, you can manage to build walls. It's still a bit irritating because the occasional 2 depth water will suspend a wall section.

If you don't mind creating a gaping hole in the ground, you can use cave ins to punch through any number of aquifer layers.

Can I get a link to how to use a safe cave-in?  If you just use a support on the left side, a simple quote will do.  I've had cave-ins disabled for a while due to a chain of... incidents.

In my opinion, exploring with the wiki is the way to go.  Just try to stick to a flowchart.

Easy World -> Embark -> Preset (If you can find one) -> Gather things -> Make storages -> etc.

It doesn't work if you don't follow requirements.  Although that's how the !FUN! happens.

EG: Gather Things -> Dig -> Find a cave -> Innocently Explore -> FB -> Barely survive -> Continue Digging -> Candy -> Circus

Generally the safest way to do cave ins is evaluate your collapse requirements, mine underneath the layer, build supports, link supports to levers, dig out the tiles around your collapse point, retreat your miners, pull levers, wait for your computer to unlock.

In practice it can be harder than it sounds. If you didn't plot the collapse properly, you'll pull the lever and one tile will end up suspending others, and now you have a highly unsafe chunk of terrain that will possibly collapse the first time you screw with it.

You should head to the wiki for the exact tile mechanics that govern cave-ins.
