Dwarf Fortress causing Ubuntu 11.04 to crash
« on: June 21, 2011, 12:03:07 am »

I'm new to the forum and Ubuntu but not to Dwarf Fortress. I wanted to try out Ubuntu and see if DF performed any better on it, but every time I play I get about 10 minutes in and my whole computer will freeze and I have to restart it. I searched around on the forum, but couldn't find any similar problems. So I figure it's how I have Ubuntu set up that's giving me trouble and not the game itself. The crashes seem to occur when I'm spamming commands. At first I thought I might not have swap set up properly, but that gparted shows a 4Gb swap partition. I might not have my graphics card drivers up to date and I'm running in VBO. I'm not sure if that would have any effect. Any advice?

Update. I got another crash after resizing the window to fill the screen (still in window mode). Hopefully this helps narrow down the problem.

I've had crash issues on latest Ubuntu too, though not as predictably as you. Serious stuff, which locks up screen and keyboard - I can use magic sysrq to get control of the latter, but it doesn't help appreciably (switching to terminal doesn't fix graphics).

I blame this new "Unity" BS they're pushing.

I'm running Mint, which is fairly Ubuntu-based but uses Gnome instead of Unity, and I get no problems at all. I suppose Unity could indeed be causing the issue, I hear it's more resource-intensive. If you can't get the Linux native DF to work, you could also use Wine to run the Windows version, you might have more luck with that. I explain the Wine method here.

I've written bash scripts to make using DF easier under Linux!

I'm plaing on Ubuntu and i don't have any problems with Dwarf Fortress and DwarfTerapist. I think, you must set "Classic Ubuntu" when you log in to your Linux Account, because it can be crashed by Unity or special visual efects

The odds are you have a problem with your computer and not DF. It's probably overheating due to the CPU load of playing DF...

I still got a crash after running on Ubuntu classic without effects. I'm sure it's not my PC overheating, since I can run it on windows without problems. I might just have to stick to playing on windows until the next release. Does anyone else notice an FPS gain when running on Linux vs Windows? That's the main reason I wanted to try it on Linux.

I use Linux Mint Debian Edition, which bypasses Ubuntu altogether. A tad more difficult to use, but much better. I don't have any problems running DF, except when the horrible Adobe Flash Plugin decides to display the video on my game... .

I'm running 10.10 but haven't noticed any problems with DF. Indeed, I boot Linux on my Mac so I can play DF + Dwarf Therapist.

No software problem in user space should cause your computer to lock hard, in any OS (even Windows).

What video card/driver?

I have no issues with Ubu10.10 either.  Ive run it on Mint 10 'Julia' but not tried 'Katya' (11).

Generally i dont notice any real performance differences between the linux and windows platforms.
Also, my money is on the videocard, get it checked out physically as well as check for drivers.  My last desktop used to lockup playing DF (though blackscreening too) and it turned out to be dust-damage on the GPU

My card is an Nvidia 8800 gt something. My driver's are up to date on windows (I run SC2 with no trouble, so it's not a physical problem). I tried updating them for Ubuntu but it kept yelling at me for running X server, which I tried to disable but never quite figured it out. This must be what's wrong. Any ideas on how to disable X server? Thanks for the advice so far.

X server is the graphical rendering layer in Linux/Unix. Without it you only have a text screen (though I suppose you could still conceivably run DF in 2D curses mode). You need to be running the X server that is compatible with your video card, not disable X entirely.
