That is the point. That's always the point. It just doesn't have to be mentioned because it's a given.
It just happens that, in this situation, you're also trying to save the Dwarf which is on the receiving end of the pointless carnage. Through the use of said pointless carnage.

Also, unless I'm mistaken, isn't there a bug where you could burn their skin off with magma, thus removing the infection? (And making them immune to magma; a plus!)

Maybe you should include a way of sterilizing the blades in the trap immediately prior to the surgery? Like with magma that pours out the top over the weapon trap and drains out the bottom. Nothing cleans quite like magma does.

Won't the new injury possibly get infected as well?

Doesn't this mean you simply have to send them for another round in the torturesurgery theatre?

What's wrong with using magma? That's almost always the easiest method.
I have issues channeling it properly to do that method. I end up flooding the fortress with magma.

Serrated disks modded to be in "upright spear/spike traps" seem to be efficient, but I didn't see that the dwarf I sent in wasn't wearing all the necessary armor.

So he just ended up cut in pieces, stupid dwarf. Next !

I don't see all the fuss about infections. More than half of my military is infected for being wounded at some point in the past and no one ever died from it. Except one guy - for some reason he just did not receive proper wound dressing (I had accidentally drafted the competent medic during a long siege) and he died in the hospital.

Everyone else happily carries on with their infection.

Naked dwarves remove the need to produce more clothing, which means more of your pig tails can be brewed into booze.
I think this is less a problem and more an expression of dwarven priorities.

My fort is undergoing a tantrum spiral, so i'll just let it die. I'll do a fort with the 7 initial dwarves responsible of the test chamber, and all migrants will be test subjects for !!SCIENCE!!.

3) With the upcoming syndroms and all the ways to get them, infections (and similar) might become much more dangerous, so finding ways of taking care of it could be useful.

In my experience infections are damn dangerous, but sometimes they can linger for years before they kill. Or disappear altogether. Also infections can occur even after cleaning the wound, sometimes not at the same time if the injured dwarf has more than one. May be coincidence, but most if not all infections of my soldiers began after surgery - I wonder whether dwarven surgeons know that any suture needs to be disinfected before use...

I don't know if this is a common occurrence, but there is a ghost in my current fortress (or was, I might have put it to rest without noticing) that is fond of battering random dwarves in a Mengele fashion. Their limbs are removed instantly, without blood loss or infections. According to the wiki, ghosts tend to haunt their friends and relatives. With this in mind, one could massacre a couple of dorfs close to the afflicted patient and hope for the best.

A gobbo-powered hacking trap. Instead of using serrated discs, use a stripped gobbo (or troglodyte, or... ) wielding a hacking weapon.

These are awful ideas, don't try them. Please, don't.

The ghost idea is very dwarfy, but difficult to control, as we don't know how to get specific ghost types or how to guarantee ghosts at all, because it is largely random. The goblin idea is cruel, but a bit boring after the ghost idea.

You guys all talk about saving useful dwarves, but are you considering that they're going to be less useful minus a hand or foot? Without at least 1 hand your legendaries are going to be rather limited in usefulness. Of course, you might luck out and only remove their utterly useless bits like fingers or toes, but you'll need to keep your still-present fingers crossed.

Someone once told me that glass trap components are unlikely to do any damage, unless they actually cut a body part clean off. Maybe glass spears could be used. Do those exist?

No glass spears without modding. You can have glass menacing spikes, though.
