Even if "ultramax" isn't a real level, I have to wonder what the hell is so bad that that supermax just isn't good enough? Do they think they're some kind of uber-Hannibal Lecter, where if you even step outside the cell for one minute you'll McGyver some air molecules into a laser gun and slaughter your way to freedom?

Commonly, it's actually to keep a prisoner from killing other prisoners, and to try to minimize gang related violence.  Even the solitary-confinement supermaxes have their little share of gang-related killings though (sometimes from a paid-off guard).

No matter how badass your fighting skills are and how many scraps of clothing you've managed to weaponize, I can't imagine that three dudes with automatic weapons have even the remotest reason to be worried about you if you're coming from a well-guarded cell.

@Aqizzar: I guess that makes sense, but even if you're worried about people being strangled to death before a guard makes it onto the scene, the "supermax" criteria seemed strict enough.

Hence why these are the required conditions to contain people so bad they make the ususal Supermax inmates seem like model citizens.

Here's one of the things prisoners have weaponized: Paper. Not a lot of paper, or some badass superpaper, either. One sheet of standard paper, as a lethal weapon. That's internet meme-level weaponization. (They make a knife out of the tightly-folded paper, if you're wondering.)

To use a bigger-scale example, the British army is one of the few armies in the western world that still trains in and successfully utilises the bayonet charge and in recent memory has won battles without taking casualties using the bayonet charge against people armed with automatic weapons.

Don't underestimate the damage a man with a sharp stick can do...especially if you have a prison block full of angry angry people who've managed to arm themselves with sharp sticks enough of whom have managed to co-ordinate an aggressive push...

bayonet charge

My god, they still do that?
I hear it is meant to be one of the most horrific thing any modern solider would ever have to do. I wonder how it plays on their psyche...

Easier than WW1, more cover due to the fact that most warfare is in urban areas now.

I know the last major American bayonet charge was during the Korean War and the American army is phasing them out for other melee combat methods and stopped bayonet training.

Prison guards have to be so "hard faced" and cruel to inmates is because humans are squishy, and it's their lives on the line. Can't afford to let your guard down in such a situation, but you still have to protect the people who could very well be planning on killing you and keep them from killing each other. It's an odd dynamic, to say the least.

Conversely, Taliban recruits have taken up mass bayonet charges on American positions in Afghanistan.  Occasionally; they largely started it out of a total lack of ammunition, and it didn't take them long to remember that the positions they were attacking could see them coming.  Still scared the piss out of some Marines, but it was totally ineffective as a strategy.

American health care reform, and general human rights in developed countries. But that isn't nearly as fun as improvised military tactics!

To be fair improvised military tactics would be a good analogy to what dangerous gangs of inmates can come up with...

Meh, if the jail's get too overcrowded I say you just take a leaf out of England's book and ship the inmates off the Australia ;D

prisons here you have to slop out your self, toilets are a luxury for guards and politicals and also the crazy that turn it into weapon. sharp stuff + poop = nasty infection.
If allowed access to boiling water and sugar for tea you can nicely melt the guards or that weirdos face off.
If you want fancy stuff easist way is buy it and have it bought to prision for you. several of the big ones here have plasma tellys and subscription tv as they paid for it and guards work for them. Phones and drugs are commonly smuggled in as well.

also in womens prison one women had smuggled in quote "12" black thick supercock dildo" how she got in it did not say.

Also america has crap health care unless you pay for everything to quote one i know "F off and die if you dont have the money"

Always happy for a new drinking buddy, Mate! Just make sure you pack em with a crate of limes. Not that were worried about scurvy, just that they go great with tequila!

Reminds me of what Dwight Eisenhower said, "If you want total security, go to prison. There you're fed, clothed, given medical care and so on. The only thing lacking... is freedom."

I think its supposed to be a stab at socialist ideology, but its sorta sad that the losers in a free society usually end up in prison. We got a lot of losers in society and a lot of people in prison, thats for sure.
