Love the idea behind this http://www.xsyon.com/

Sadly the idea is vastly superior to the current implementation. They are still YEARS away from truly being a playable game, even with their official launch this spring past - there's just nothing to shoot for and the crafting focus is ruined by the completely boring crafting system.

Fallen Earth is going F2P soon and I'll be grabbing that, I like the game a lot but don't like the subscription model.

I currently play no MMOs; I played WoW back in... 2007? I played EVE for a bit, mostly because it was in space and was one of the few that supported my Mac in some shape or form.  I think I was disappointed in the stagnation and the fact that feature creep trumped things like basic bug fixing.  Also, the "depth" is only in quantity, not variation; everything there turned out to be exactly the same.

I think I've come to the conclusion that the main appeal of MMOs, the social aspect, is actually the genre's Achilles' heel as well.  I actually find that the social aspects of the forums for "single player" games are more social (without the drawbacks).

MMOs also suffer from "when the server goes, the game dies" problems.

But maybe I'm just getting old and jaded...

Shores of Hazeron is fun.

You create a species spore-style and then build a spacefaring civilization. You don't level up or even change your character, but the empire you control (or are a member of) basically dictates what equipment and, more importantly, space ships are available. Space ships are entirely custom-designed, which is the big feature.

Anyone here ever played Mabinogi? For whatever reason, it's the game that refuses to run on Windows 7 and they just can't be arsed updating it.

I don't have a powerful computer, nor a good enough net connection to play graphical MMOs these days, but I always wanted to play Age of Conan, I hear it has a great combat system and a decent amount of roleplayers...
And also, apparently it's going Free to play! :) Sounds pretty damn cool, just wish my computer could handle it...

Also I played Warhammer Online for a while when I had better internet, that was good.
But mostly I play RPIs. Seriously, so much more depth and fun goes into a game when the developers aren't just worried about graphics. :D

Right now I'm playing DDO, simply because it's one of, if not, the best free one right now.

I've also played nearly every mmo there is out there, because I like the idea and hate the implementation in most of them. They're just wrong. So I'm hoping for a true gem to show up sometime... hopefully... if ever.

But I'm looking forward to:
Firefall - Basically a TF2 MMO with emphasis on guilds and pvp. The PVE seems fun as well, so far we have only seen a swarm style of pve where you have to protect a certain machine from aliens. The greatest aspect for me is the horizontal leveling. They compare this to other mmos saying you have a vertical leveling in other mmos, where a level 10 is always stronger than a level 1. On firefall on the other hand, being level 10 will only mean you have more varied weapons, armor and upgrades. Of course, there's a bit of vertical scaling, but they want to keep low levels able to team up and even fight against higher levels on par.

The Secret World - From the makers of Anarchy Online, the MMO I've played the most. It features no levels, no classes. You can team up with anyone, fight anyone, and so on. What happens in this MMO is that you have a deck of 7 passive and 7 active skills and there are over 500 of them to pick from. Instead of levels, you have points, everytime you fill your XP bar you gain a point to put in skills. Also, skills don't level up in the traditional sense. If you picked lets say, Fireball, it will be the same as of someone who picked a fireball after 300 skill points. The only way to make that fireball better is to pick skills in the same group it is. So not only your fireball gets a bit better, but you also get another skill. So you're never just spending points to get one more DPS as it would be the case of diablo/wow-like talent trees, you actually get stuff out of it.

I'm kind of looking forward to Firefall as well, but the "Free to Play" of it scares me.  Usually free to play means to me things like purchasing inventory slots and tedious grinding.

I'm hoping that I'm just being paranoid.

Hey, these are the games I am looking forward to as well! The Secret World's system sounds cool, I hadn't read about that, so thank you good sir!

Nope, they have a strict policy of not being able to purchase power.

They want to sell cosmetic items and possibly XP boosts as far as we know. They haven't been very clear on this on the forums yet, but they try to assure everyone people wont be able to buy power whenever this issue comes up... And it comes up a lot.

Quote from: From the FAQ
We plan to offer a marketplace for Firefall that will offer players items to enhance their gaming experience. We are adamantly against selling anything that might compromise the skill-based aspect of the game.

Well, an XP boost MIGHT count as a power boost depending on how things are.  Hopefully they'll keep it to cosmetics.  Worst-case  I'll just play PvE where it doesn't matter.

They haven't been clear on XP boosts. But yeah, I also don't like the idea of them, but it's not as bad as in other F2P FPS where you can buy a weapon with money that takes a month for you to unlock without spending money.

True enough.

This is why I tend to like my games to cost money.  It gives them a reason to keep me playing because things are fun and I'm paying to continue having fun.  With Free-to-play it gives them reason to require my money to make things more fun, and to limit my fun if I don't pay.

But you never know, some game companies have a bit more integrity than others.

Speaking of free-to-play games with micro transactions, anyone remember Exteel? It was a very fun fast-paced PvP-oriented MMO with robots. Too bad many items required microtransactions or a very long grind to get... with a few more maps, less grind, and no microtransactions it would've been a game worth purchasing at a price comparable to Guild Wars.

Never really could get into GW, personally.

I've tried several.
Allods Online: bajillion spammers in the post-tutorial starting area. Got bored of muting everyone in the chat, but it was interesting somewhat until then.

DDO: Pretty awesome. lots of stuff you have to buy after ~Lv 15 (so you don't run out of quests, not because theres good equipment in there), but I haven't gotten there yet.

Global Agenda (Steam F2P version): Woo, jetpacks! and a Robotics class thats akin to TF2 Engy. I'd say fun so far.

Spiral Knights (same as above): Simple, fun, but has a energy limit that sounds annoying.
