While /b/ may be full of people some, or most of us would rather avoid, they are still people, doing people things for people reasons. It also provides a somewhat unique environment to study them in as well as giving a metric crap-ton of data for them to use.

Understanding human psychology easily ranks among the most important things to study in the world. /b/ is a very large example of a distinct environment where both anonymity and such fleeting posts exists.

7% of /b/'s activity is dedicated towards calling for action? That's far higher than I expected for the website, and does indicate that its political actions must be studied deeply...but really, researchers need to compare this sort of activity to other forums to see if this is abnormal or not.

And threads lasting a total of three minutes before being purged entirely seems very strange culturally.
