Props to the scholars for getting what seems to be a proper picture of /b/. I'd say I even learnt a few things from it.

It's good to see that the elite and gifted minds at MIT have the free time to give a small group of internet trolls undeserved time and attention.

It's good to see conservatives still threatened by anyone with an education so much that they need to call them elite  ::)

Tl;dr

What good could possibly come from "researching" 4Chan? Everyone knows it's almost completely full of people who simply call eachother fags and act like idiots.

  • It's MIT.
and
  • Why do they do that stuff? It's an interesting study into behavioural patterns.

This.

While /b/ may be full of people some, or most of us would rather avoid, they are still people, doing people things for people reasons. It also provides a somewhat unique environment to study them in as well as giving a metric crap-ton of data for them to use.

Understanding human psychology easily ranks among the most important things to study in the world. /b/ is a very large example of a distinct environment where both anonymity and such fleeting posts exists.

Props to the scholars for getting what seems to be a proper picture of /b/. I'd say I even learnt a few things from it.

7% of /b/'s activity is dedicated towards calling for action? That's far higher than I expected for the website, and does indicate that its political actions must be studied deeply...but really, researchers need to compare this sort of activity to other forums to see if this is abnormal or not.

And threads lasting a total of three minutes before being purged entirely seems very strange culturally.

Yeah, but a lot of those threads end quickly with "/b/ is not your personal army".
