How do I actually make a dwarf DO SOMETHING?!

A dwarf has to have the proper labor active in order to do a job. To construct a wall, the proper labor depends on the material: if the material is metal, it takes weaponsmithing, armorsmithing, blacksmithing, or metalcrafting, if the material is wood it takes carpentry, and otherwise it takes masonry.

Also, the job site has to be accessible by the dwarf, as does the material queued to make a particular wall.

To activate a labor, scroll to a dwarf with the v-cursor, enter their (p)references screen, then their (l)abor screen. Scroll through that with +-*/ and activate an inactive labor with ENTER. For accessibility, note that walls use a specific material, not just a type of material.

I've noticed that getting dorfs to do jobs is like trying to get the lazy cuban's in tropico to do ANYTHING.......they have a tendency to do it when they want.

It's so hard to get them to build walls... if you have Dwarf Therapist you can disable all other labours on the lazy ones and see if that helps, but otherwise you simply have to pray.

Yeah that's about the best way. choose several "useless" dorfs and turn off all labors and turn on Mason as a job.
I have to say Dwarf Therapist is a VERY important utility to have while playing dwarf fortress.

So it's a condition similar to toxoplasmosis then? That would also explain their complaisance.
