Once upon a time, Armenian forces invaded Greece. They were expecting to face two armies. The core of Greek forces. Armored hoplites, generals, missile cavalry. They were ready.
First wave was of regular hoplites.
And Armenian forces dealt with them quite easily.
The second one, was where the difficult part began. Armored hoplites and plenty of generals. They outnumbered Armenians quite significantly, and it was sure, that many men will die.
At the cost of many lives, the Greek army was destroyed. ( i could have done much better here, but i tend to maneuver myself into trouble )
Now nothing stood in the way of... what the fuck.. No! Where the hell did you come from!?!?
That's what you get for not scouting the entire area before landing..
I considered withdrawing, but instead choose to stay, inflict casualties and THEN run.. Once on battlefield i've noticed "Rout" symbol grayed out. Greeks throw everything they have at us.
At this point, the advisor is telling me to run (quote at the top) I'm not going to. There is no way out.
The reinforcements are pushovers, one unit of missile cav, some militia hoplites and general with 5 bodyguards left.
18, 12, 7, 3... That's one hell of a cavalry force... Not. Not even if you play on small unit scale. Greek balista crew has more units in it. But it has to be enough.
Balista and Archers can take out quite a bit of my troops, i can not have that. At this point, every soldier is priceless..
...unless those idiots charge a phalanx.. HOW IS THIS EVEN POSSIBLE?!
Greeks make a mistake by not staying in formation. Archers are exposed.
compare our unit count on this screen, with the one at the beginning.. All they had to do is shoot... If i ordered them myself, the incompetent cav would charge another phalanx though.. Sigh.
I move the damn horse archers myself. Skirmishing disabled. Circle disabled. These two abilities make your troops retarded. Manual it is.
My cav didn't inflict enough casualties, Archers and Balista crew are returning.
With arrows being next to useless, i need to dogpile on the Phalanx. However, i only have horse archers.. This means, we can take only one at a time, with all our forces at once.. So..
Our cav makes sure that neither balista, nor archers will get in our way.
I'm trying some fancy encircling to wipe the hoplites with arrows.. But by now i've learned that Armored Hoplites on this difficulty don't die to regular horse archers.
With nothing to lose, i begin operation "Take as many of them down, as possible" (not very creative, i admit)
Surprisingly it worked (you can see the routing band on the left) but i get a bit overconfident and don't check the morale before charging the second unit..
Or rather - i don't check if it has the general in it.. They did..
It was a bad move, but thankfully i withdraw them fast enough.
Thankfully our slingers are keeping Greek attention.. We have a chance yet. Oh.. one of my troops routs..
..Bloody hell..
