So I'm pretty sure I want to get it but I think I need an extra push.

So please by all means convince me to get it.

As a side question if I do get it should I get the GOTY edition?

Get New Vegas instead, easily a way better game.

Haven't played FO:3 myself, so can't comment on it, but I'll second that FO:NV is fun!

if you can get a gold pack with all the dcl's get it, each individual DLC is kinda a game in itself, and about 10-15 hours of game-play through it's main quest.  So if you get bored of the main FO3 then just go play a DLC instead, same character, new kickass enemies and quests.  Just getting FO3 by itself sucks, New Vegas is a really good standalone game though.

I remember playing with that settlement mod too, where you can pretty much build and design your own city.  I think someone said the developer was taking a break from it, which sucks.  But maybe that would weigh in your decision if you'd like to have a side project involving town building/developing/survival.

New Vegas is more immersive, and alot more similar to the older fallout games. Much more weapons plus hardcore mode make it much better.

If you really wanna get fallout 3 though, get the version with all DLCs on it.

Another for New Vegas. It has all the things Fallout 3 has and in addition it also has a perfectly decent storyline that isn't overflowing with generic and cliché, unlike Fallout 3's which is, when the chips are down, pretty rubbish.

Gameplay-wise they're almost alike, although New Vegas uses non-combat skills a lot more than Fallout 3 does and in a greater variety of ways.

If you're just looking for Oblivion-with-guns free-roam content Fallout 3 is perfectly serviceable, but if you're looking for a real RPG experience New Vegas wins the prize hands down.

If you want more convincing about FO3 (outside the gold pack suggestion as well), you can always watch these guys' summaries. Always an entertaining way to view the game.

it most certainly is, but there's a few places that will seriously mess you up if you try and go there when you are weak.  It may be more realistic then fallout3 since there is places that enemies don't level scale, they just are massively powerful.

Hmmm that does sound nice.  I hated the scaling in Oblivion.  (I vastly preferred morrowind to Oblivion.  Content wise is it as expansive as the GOTY basic one?

Why New Vegas is better:
-The storyline is better and less linear. You get to choose who to side with and it's not a total copy-paste job.
-The writing is better overall.
-The combat is better balanced and there's things in the world you won't be able to beat at low level.
-Companion characters aren't a complete afterthought like in FO3 and have got their own stories and endings.
-The ending slides mention something more than the ones in FO3. Every locale of any importance has an ending. FO3 also completely missed the point of the ending slides by making them only mention what you just did (like you had alzheimers and forgot or something) rather than what the results of those actions were.
-The crafting can be used for something other than junk-guns.
