I had 2 wall grates plus a weapon trap set to block anything bad from getting into my fort from the underground river... the giant olm squeezed right through.
I havent checked, he might fit through floor grates too.

oh, i could see how that could get through a grate then... & i guess weapon traps dont work underwater?

is there any good way then to block stuff from coming in through there?

should i be worried about him coming up through my pumps? is a giant olm a pretty easy fight?

arent olms rodent thingies, if so they randomly appear in water and trivial thinks like grates traps and lack of parentage wont stop them.

Those would be regular olms. There is a variety that is giant and quite willing to defend its territory.

And fire imps can now get through fortifications. Compared to the rest of the creatures hanging around this place (several trolls that I'm intending to use as archery targets), they're nothing, though.

So grates and fortifications don't block things below a particular size, then?

I think this may be related: a magma man just squeezed through a grate of mine. (first time ive ever seen a mgma man move come to think of it)

Magma man probably flowed through your grate - like T1000.

Oddly enough, one does not need bauxite to make magma-submerged grates.

They're like walls: even made of wood they don't burn when in contact with hot substances.

I constructed a fortification of some inferior rock type in 38c.  When I tried to pass magma through it, the fortification broke and turned back into the tock it was built from.

I would have carved the fortification, but that seems to be broken now.  Designate 'a' won't designate anything at all.

Hmm.  I'll have to alter my current forge designs, thanks for mentioning the fortification thing.  

Also, magma men hve a teensy little problem.  They can't swim.

Fire imps and fire men can swim, which allows them to move through magma the way that they do.  Magma men got left out of this happy little party, and are confined to sitting at the bottom of the vent.

Oh, I'm dumb, I forgot to smooth the wall, thats why I couldnt dig fortification.  Still, dont use constructed fortification unless you have bauxite.
