Stock Market Challenge
« on: June 17, 2011, 07:44:15 pm »

The premise:

I give any players imaginary bay12 dollars to the amount of 10,000$. This amount is not-negotiable.
They invest in REAL stock.
They make a gain or loss.

The goal:

To make the most money.

Other factors:

Capital gains tax on the sale of stock. This is at 15% for stock owned less than 4 years (so all of it! I'd imagine). I understand this isn't an entirely realistic interpretation of CGT, but It's good enough for our purpose.

We are using US law.

The method:

Silent posts:
Buy 1000 stock @ such and such price, from NYSE/NASDAQ etc.
Costing such and such, leaving me such and such.

As each message is timestamped I can and will check the stock price! so no cheating.
If you cannot afford the amount of shares you stated, I will buy as many as you can afford.

Question: Can we purchase mutual funds? If no, can we purchase ETF's?

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.

I will make a post each day or couple of days about the current networth of each of our people, with the latest news report linked form the exchange for each of our companies. Also I'll mark the current leader each time.

If you explain to me the precise workings of mutual funds in terms of how we could use it here, yes  8)

By mutual fund, do you mean multiple players could buy stock together to share the risk? If so, a quick look at this makes me think we could include closed-end funds if you wish.

*I would say no to the ETF's though, it adds unnecessary complexity to our meager simulation   :P

**Note for future reference, I am not an economics graduate, nor have I never studied economics. If you can explain to me how to make a factor work and it doesn't include unnecessary levels of complications, I will include it!

A mutual fund is a group of stocks, bonds, commodities, and other assest managed by a professional broker. You can trade them like regular stocks but only after the trading day is over. ETF's (Exchange Traded Funds) are the same thing but can be traded during the day. That's the short version. In either case, they both have stock tickers that work in the regular manner.

There are websites designed to play this exact game. They take care of everything from giving everybody money to buying and selling stocks to checking the prices and making comparisons to keeping track of dividends to even allowing other stock buying and selling commands (puts, calls, and options). It would also be a lot easier for you than having you check every single purchased stock every day or couple of days. I only say this because checking 40 stocks can take a loooooooongass time. And it only gets worse when a person buys more than one company.

I'll look into mutual funds more tomorrow. It's getting late here :D

As for the maths - I wont be over complicating it and doing the maths isnt hard as I am using a spreadsheet program (Which all I have to do is change the stock price every day or so and report it.

Yeah I know there are some games, but this is a simple one and requires little effort on anyones part!

Also the exchange sites are very helpful, for the current stocks i just entered the symbols in all at once, and got a list of the prices. Very easy!

I will probably put everything on a daily or two daily post though, instead of the first post. Editing a first post over and over can get messy. For today though I'll leave it as it is.

========>Info

Just a note, the NASDAQ website has quotes from all the exchanges, which makes it simpler. If anyone needs to search their stock from multiple exchanges, suggest using that.

You can also Google a stock symbol if you just want a fast quote or chart, although the NASDAQ site has that cool symbol lookup feature.
