I have zero depth peception
« on: June 17, 2011, 02:47:05 pm »

I was doing a vision test for my driver's license when the optician told me that I have zero depth perception and most likely have never been able to tell depth since birth.

...

It blew my mind. I never knew this for over TWENTY YEARS. It explains so much! It explains why I never understood what was so amazing about Avatar 3D's graphics or why I am incapable to appreciating scenery or even why I can't hit a baseball to save my life.

Now I'm so freaking curious! You people with depth perception! What does the world actually look like?! Am I missing a third dimension?!

Asking someone to describe how they perceive is a very tricky thing, I still don't know how my roommate perceives color, I guess, I don't know, Like I-max all the time?!?! kinda? Like I only realy notice it when I am measuring things I think of it as being able to draw a line between two objects as they exist in space relative to each other in my head, but that may be called something else.

I can see depth and 3D doesn't make a move any better imo.
But I can't hit a basebal either so I might just have the same thing as you  :-X

I've never been able to tell a difference between binocular and monocular vision, but I can tell when something is in 3d.  Hmm.

Okay. Hold out your hand in front of your face as far as your arm can stretch. Now bring in your had towards your face as fast as you can, but make sure to stop it so that it only taps your nose.

Having depth perception is like not slapping yourself in the face.

No idea how to explain it, but I figured I'd say you aren't missing out on the 3D movies. They're way over-hyped.

I can do that with having both my eyes shut. You don't really need depth perception to know here your hand is.

Yeah, that'd be spatial awareness.  It's quite possible to be somewhat deficient in that (says the serial toe-stubber).

Doing it with someone else's hand seems like an invitation to be repeatedly slapped in the face :P.

I've never fully understood why stereostropic vision was a requirement for depth perception, especially since I can judge distance just as well with one eye closed. Then again, I have reason enough to believe I've psychic, so that may be part of it...

With steroscopic vision, you can judge how far an object is without knowing what size it is. Without it you can only get distance as a function of size, basically.

Yes, your incredible psychic powers give you the ability to judge distance with one eye.  Let teh world tremble before you.

I've said it before, I'll say it here too.
A special set of circumstances (seriously, I think there's maybe six or seven people in the entire United States with this problem) leaves me seeing correctly out of both eyes, but the images being in the wrong place.
I can't perceive depth.  Even worse, I see two of everything that is in both eyes' FOV.
Fortunately, I've learned to ignore one image when looking at my computer screens, so it doesn't affect me too much here.
It's especially annoying trying to drive, though.

Is it something like this?

If it's the binocular one, you can probably help it (and look kindof badass) by wearing an eyepatch.  If it's monocular, I guess not.

I have no depth perception... It makes the current trend of 3d movies most annoying.

Can you give yourself double vision on will?
