33g: Dwarf won't go inside on all inside order.
« on: February 08, 2008, 02:28:00 pm »

Hello, I have a dwarf who refuses to go inside when I put " All Dwarves Inside" on. Instead, he crawls out of his sick bed and stands in the middle of the trade depot, right next to the goblin siegers. This is in fact, the only reason he was injured in the first place, as he was doing it before he got injured. I have no clue why, but it is VERY annoying.

Indeed, the command only vaguely works.

I've had half my fortress rush outside as soon as the fighting started, even though they listened *before* any goblin had died.  You basically need to find other ways to control your dwarves: draft them, have them station inside somewhere, then lock the doors.

The single dwarf standing out near the depot sounds like maybe some form of failed meeting with a diplomat or something similar. There's no reason for it to go out that far and stand around while not spamming forbidden area cancellations. If the person was never your mayor (or maybe broker, as well, due to the proximity to the trade depot), then it's probably someone that wanted to meet with your mayor and failed, which just means they'll sit on the same spot and no job endlessly anyway. Probably best to just let him or her chill with the goblins.

The stay inside issue, however, is that they don't care whether they're trying to go outside or not until they're actually out there, and by then they usually get scared away from the entrance by the siegers. So yes, 10 layers of doors is the best option.

The dwarf in question was a mere wood burner, was never angry enough to meet with the mayor. He did jobs if I needed them done, just wouldn't do anything but stand shock still in that spot when I turned on stay inside. He even crawls out of his bed, out of the fort and into that spot with a red leg and a mangled arm. Dwarves won't even do that for water/food, yet to stand outside, puking with mangled limbs he'll crawl with one arm.
