New Player, need help setting up Mac version
« on: June 17, 2011, 12:55:40 pm »

Hello, newby here :D.

I downloaded the latest Mac version of the game, and it runs just fine as far as I can tell. However, I want to play the game along with the "Complete Newby Play-along Tutorials" and the version you download from there is for Windows. I need help with a couple things.

1, How do I transfer the saved game and world from the tutorial version onto the newest Mac version? I understand that transferring saved games from older versions is difficult and I don't know how out of date the tutorial version is.

2, How do I install the Mayday graphics set onto the newest Mac version? I can only find the Mayday set bundled with downloads of the game, and not as its own download. I've tried ripping it out of the tutorial version and putting it onto the Mac version, but I don't know exactly what files you need to transfer and what changes you need to make to the init files. I've figured out how to change the tileset from the wiki, I just can't figure out how to change the graphic set.

1. No idea

2. Easy (I think...?), download the bundle, go to raws, and copy the stuff there into your own raws folder in your mac version.

Just the copying raws folder doesn't work. What I've been doing is:

1. Replacing the entire raws folder on the Mac version with the raws folder from the tutorial.

2. Copying the files in the tutorial art folder (maydayMAX.bmp, maydayMED.bmp, maydayMIN.bmp, maydayMIX.bmp) into the Mac art folder.

3. Copying the files init Max.txt, init MED.txt, init MIN.txt, and init MIX.txt from the tutorial into the Mac init folder, and replacing the Mac version's init.txt with the tutorials init.txt.

When I do this and start the game up, it doesn't use any of the special graphics (it just uses a different font), and the world generator keeps crashing for some reason.

EDIT: I think I fixed it by using the latest Mayday download and not the one from the tutorial. I replaced the raws folder, the art folder, and I changed the text in the init.txt file to accept graphics and to load them from the right place. Now I just need the saved game and world.

One question: I noticed that some of the punctuation on the menu screens got replaced with tiles with dots on them. Is that supposed to happen?

EDIT2: I'm really starting to think I did something wrong, because every now and then, text or punctuation will show up as symbols instead of text. I also tried transferring a save file I made myself and it worked, but it caused the mayday graphics set to not work and display the wrong graphics.

It's sort of hard for me to judge whether the game is working properly or not though, since on any given test, I don't actually know what is and isn't supposed to happen... >.>

OH.

I GET IT.

The tutorial is from an older version of DF, so that probably is it. I meant for you to download the most recent version of whatever texture pack you want and then moving the raws folder from that.

Anyways, as one guy says it

Couldn't you just put the script file from the mac version into the tutorial folder?

You might need to get the script from an older mac version from the downloads page though.

Don't I know it :s. Truth be told, I'd rather have a Windows computer for games, but my primary and most powerful computer is a Mac so it's more convenient if I can get all my games to work on it. Plus it has a larger and nicer screen.

In any case, as I said before, I got the Mayday graphics set to work, but I think it isn't working properly since some of the text is displayed as symbols instead of letters. And is the latest version supposed to have colored boxes around all the text?

Probably what I'm just going to do by now is play the old tutorial version on my Windows computer so I can actually figure out how to play the game, and then I'll worry about installing the proper graphics on the new Mac version later. I might just end up playing with the ASCII graphics anyways; it looks more classy.

I think I tried something like that with both the tutorial and the most recent Mayday release, but it didn't work. However, I don't really know what I'm doing, either. What exactly is the "script file"?

I have a new question that probably seems kind of simple, but I'm having trouble finding the answer. I understand that there are several different utilities out there for managing your dwarf's tasks, like Dwarf Therapist and Dwarf Manager. Are there any out there that are Mac compatible and will run with the newest Mac version? I found one on the wiki called "Mac Foreman," but it won't load my game. I think it might be too old.

BTW, I've been playing with the tutorial version on my PC and it's working fine. I just want it on my Mac because it's faster and has a nicer and larger screen.

When you download the mac version, there's a windows executable and mac script. To run the game, you start up the script and it interprets the game as if it's a mac version. If you copied that file over to a windows game folder and ran it, I don't see any reason why it shouldn't work. There may well be something else needed though, since I don't really know how it works.

On the third-party programs... I don't think any of them work on a mac. I've never found any that do at least. You sort of get used to the horrible in-game professions interface after a while though.

Wine (unofficial mac version here) will let you run most Windows programs fairly well on OSX and Linux. I know DF, as well as Dwarf Therapist, to work very well in Wine on Linux, so I'm fairly certain you can run it as well.

To get DF working:
- Download the Wine .dmg and drag Winebottler and Wine into your applications folder, then startup Wine. Click the Wine icon on your taskbar and find Change Prefix.
- From there, create a prefix (it may auto-detect some other games and create prefixes for them, don't bother with that) in a convenient directory, call it 'generic' or something-- you can use different prefixes for different applications, but unless each needs different registry settings you don't need to, in my experience. Click Change Prefix again after it's done configuring and make sure Wine is using that one.
- Double-click a .exe and it should start X11 (simulating the Windows window system), and a little while after DF should start up in X11.
- Don't close Wine or X11 while DF is running unless you want to close without saving, since it depends on both being open.

I suppose you could also compile Therapist for OSX, the source is available, but the above method is much easier.

I think the graphical sets are mostly not that helpful at this point. I find the little bitmap illustrations more difficult to interpret than just a character, though you still get the odd goat/goose/goblin issue, though you'll probably still get that anyway. A small letter is easier to make out than a small picture.

I like the higher visibility mod/tweak. It just brightens up the colours a bit (a blue dwarf on black in the vanilla version is practically invisible on my screen) and is really simple to do.

Actually, I think I'm with you- the game seems easier to read without graphics installed. It's easier to learn with graphics, but for long term playing I'll probably just use a regular tileset. So far, I think I like the Guybrush tileset combined with one of the lighter color settings. The default square tileset is pretty good too, but the 16x16 one is sort of distorted. I'm up for suggestions about good graphics-less tilesets if anyone has any recommendations.

One quirk I've noticed is that the some of the punctuation marks are also used for the ground, so if you want your ground look more natural it makes your text look funny.

Anyway, thanks for all the tips, everyone. I'll probably either use Wine, go without utilities, or keep playing on my Windows computer.
