You can't breed elephants either, they'll starve. So they best reneweable, unmodded way might very well be 4*100 quarry bush leaves if 20-stacks are possible with a legendary +5 farmer and fertilizer.

Elephants only starve if tame.  It's possible to capture wild animals and breed them in captivity without taming them.  You'll need to keep them in a sealed room, not caged, and use remote-controlled doors and hatches to move them around.  Kill them via drops, weapon traps, or drowning, and you can then butcher the corpses.  I haven't tried this with elephants yet, but I have a wild draltha ranch in my current fortress.

Yup, quarry leaf roasts are the staple of my economy. Consistently over $20,000 per stack...

How about a roc farm? the only modding it would need is removing _exotic, too. Has anyone done this?
I tried once but trashed the second roc to military  due to an ill-timed magma flood and then fps died.

I attempted this once, but wasn't able to get a breeding pair.  Rocs are difficult, they're megabeasts and don't occur in normal populations.  You have to build a fortress large enough and wealthy enough to attract megabeast populations, then wait for them to show up.  Wild animals don't claim nest boxes anymore, so you'll need to tame your Rocs first, and hope they haven't killed any dwarves in their lives.

I don't know if the [MEGABEAST] tag still prevents creatures from successfully reproducing on your fortress site.  It didn't prevent the one female roc I was able to capture from laying eggs, but I was never able to get a male.  I have also heard that a creature's EGG_SIZE controls how long it takes its eggs to hatch.  If that's the case, a Roc egg with EGG_SIZE:201000 will take a very long time to hatch.  Hundreds of years, if it's a linear relation, considering that chicken eggs have EGG_SIZE:62.

Yeah their murderous nature will be a trouble as they tend to have alreasy killed someone by the time you start. I was going to tame them anyway, hoping that tame rocs will still claim nest boxes and will not break them down even if it's your civ's enemy.

My syrup-covered-elephant fort has begun, my hunter just brought back the first elephant, and the meat stack size was 167. Sweet pods are in the ground and my architect is working on the wood furnace (for potash).

I've run dairy forts before and I've never seen the egg phenomenon (1000+ eggs to a barrel!) happen with milk. That is, my milk stockpiles take 3+ barrels when I forget to make cheese and they don't have the 100 milk that this plan assumes they can contain. Also, because each milking job produces one milk unit at a time, I believe (though I never watched carefully) the cheese process also only produces one cheese unit at a time. Stacks of cheese are only ever seen on the caravans.

The wiki states that cheese is produced in stacks of 5, and my experience has shown this.  Unlike tallow or other similar stack-splitters, cheese takes a whole barrel, and breaks it into stacks of 5 or less.

How big did your barrels of milk get?

According to the wiki a whale has up to 773 meat. 773 * 4 = 3092 meat. So, we need just someone to catch a breeding pair of whales, breed it for perfect size, slaughter and cook with a kitchen clutter of holyfuckarmok. Good luck!

I wonder if you can cook fast enough, in a kitchen cluttered with 2800+ whale meat, to get the roast done before it starts to rot?

Have them killed. Nothing solves a problem quite as effectively as simply having it killed.

I've observed materials no rotting while in use like that.  At least, processing a water buffalo hide in a workshop for 4 months didn't rot.

Wiki said clutter slows down work up to 10 times, so you should be fine.

I don't bother making big roasts, but regularly get stacks of 50+ from having alcohol stockpile close to kitchen.

Hmm, upon more careful observation of an old fort, one of my barrels went up to 24 milk. I don't know why they decided to use 3 barrels with one having 2, one having 1 and one having 24 milk units. I ran out of creatures to milk at this point and I don't feel like waiting a month to milk some more. A single cheese job with this big milk barrel yielded 5 stacks of cheese: 5+5+5+5+4 = 24.

Do note that milk doesn't mix.  Cow and camel milk get separate barrels.

My bad for not mentioning it - that was all Llama milk. I had a 4th barrel for cow milk.

I just produced a ☼cave crocodile egg roast [120]☼ (three stacks of CC eggs and some rat weed for garnish) worth ☼24720. Requires minimal labor and also produces a ton of meat and bones.

UPDATE: Got a four stack CC egg roast resulting in a  ☼cave crocodile egg roast [202]☼ worth ☼79184(!?!)
