Largest Renewable Meal (OR; Dwarven Milk Roast)
« on: June 17, 2011, 10:59:20 am »

So I had an idea.  "Let's make a supermassive prepared meal, which you can make again".  We all know that a forgotten beast will produce hundreds of meat, but they're non-renewable.  So, I got to thinking, what's the biggest stacks of food you can reliably produce, and cook?  The solution occurred to me, that milk will be put into a bucket, and then a barrel, allowing you to use the barrel's 100 liquid limit.  All default creatures have a milking time of 16.6 days, allowing a single cow to produce ~20 units of milk in a year.  This is probably better done with something like a llama, for the reduced grazing and the increased wool.  5 milk producing animals can fill a barrel in a year, with 100 units of milk.  This could be made into a total of 300 units of milk for cooking, plus one solid item, and you can easily get a 5 stack of plants from harvesting, 20 with potash if you're lucky.  A water buffalo, if able to survive grazing, can produce ~45 units of meat.  A whale will produce upwards of 700 for a large individual.

With this in mind, is there any sport in making a massive common-item meal?  2,500+ for pure whale meat.  350+ for non-ocean attempts.  What's the most impressive, non-rare meal you can produce?  Alternatively, what's the highest per-unit value of a meal?

You think milk beats dwarven syrup out of fertilized sweet pods? I'm not anywhere near an ocean, had some elephants on my embark and will try to cage/hunt one.

5 syrup per pod, 5 pods without fertilizer.  20 with (if the wiki is correct) lending 100 syrup units.  Granted, this can be done much faster than milk, but good call.

Aren't milk in barrels limited to 25 or 10 units? And cheesemaking limited to stack of 5 each? I haven't milked and processed cheese in 2010 version yet, but that was how it was in 40d.

I would imagine the largest stack would be from butchering massive creatures that you could breed, like Roc ( which have 500 some units of meat each, according to wiki ) and roasting it, making at least [2000], however it's a megabeast so that's a bit difficult to make an industry out of them. The next most massive creature I know of is elephants, which would provide around a hundred stack of meat when well-bred ( however this won't work very well in versions with pastures, without adjusting the grazer value. )

http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:List_of_creatures_by_adult_size this could help, though.

And stack of 20 plants from potash? I thought the maximum was 12, and that's getting very lucky  :o

Wouldn't have any idea of value, you could cheat and use dragon meat, which have 15x value, though only 110, 130 stacks of meat ( just checked in arena mode )

Sea serpents produce 100+ units of meat.  They can't be bred in the current version, unfortunately.  You need to mod them to be [PET] instead of [PET_EXOTIC] and remove the egg-laying tags to breed them in the current version.  Once you do that, they're an infinitely renewable resource.

It is perfectly possible to build a sustainable elephant farm in the current version, provided you use wild elephants.  Only tame animals need to eat.

Wild elephant meat roasts seem to be the best opportunity for renewable massive resources... aside from breeding whales, of course.

Curiously, can you confirm submerged nest boxes won't work? :P After all, submerged traps do.

It's been confirmed they don't, as they're treated as a building rather than a trap.

According to the wiki a whale has up to 773 meat. 773 * 4 = 3092 meat. So, we need just someone to catch a breeding pair of whales, breed it for perfect size, slaughter and cook with a kitchen clutter of holyfuckarmok. Good luck!

Does butcher skill affect meat stack size?

You'll need to add the [PET] tag to whales.  At the moment, only creatures with [PET] can breed.

Does butcher skill affect meat stack size?

No, only the time it takes to butcher the corpse.  Meat stack size is determined by the creature's size and body composition.

You can't breed elephants either, they'll starve. So they best reneweable, unmodded way might very well be 4*100 quarry bush leaves if 20-stacks are possible with a legendary +5 farmer and fertilizer.
