You look around for something to stand on, but the room is otherwise empty. You figure you could rip a length of your clothing to use as a bandage, or you could rip a strip from the sleeping bag in your room.

As you contemplate how to get Mark down, you hear the footsteps of two guards coming down the hall, cackling to eachother how they're going to enjoy whipping the almost turned human.

You feel pretty safe in assuming that they mean Mark. What would you like to do?

Oh shit. Not good.

Motion Mark to be quiet and hide in a dark corner, with your club ready. When they come through the door and are halfway to mark, bash the head of one of the guards in quietly and do the same for the other quickly. Try to get the one that is behind the other first as quietly as possible, so you can sneak up on the other one.

You look around the room for a spot to hide, but being empty, have a tough time deciding. You end up moving to the darkest corner in the room, which happens to be right next to the door, which opens inward. This combination, you think, will render you invisible when the guards first enter the room.

The heavy door creaks open slowly as the chattering gets louder. The guards enter the room without even looking in your direction, both grinning at Mark with their disgusting, sharp teeth. One wields a leather whip, the other a shoddy looking metal tipped spear.

The whip wielding guard happens to be walking a couple feet ahead of the other, giving you the perfect opportunity to bash the spear wielding guard's skull in. Your attack glances off of it, however, knocking it down but still leaving it alive and conscious.

The other guard turns around at the thud, but in his shock you manage to kick him back.

The spear guard is beginning to stand up again. What would you like to do?

Balls, that didn't go as planned.

Stomp on the neck of the one that is getting up and grab his spear. Then impale the other one with it.

This sounds good to me

You really think dark gnome's would capture a giant rat and let it roam free? Worst case scenario is that Maverick was killed to save time or was eaten, best case is he's penned up somewhere.

It may be useful, yes, but we don't know if they DID capture our pet rat instead of eating it, and we don't know if he is in earshot. What we do know is that there is a barracks nearby, most likely filled with troops. It would be best NOT to whistle so we don't get the attention of 20 or so guards.

Best case scenario he escaped and led the rats in a revolt and is as we speak taking over the ship, that is the best case

No best case scenario is he's about to detonate a thermonuclear bomb to which only our captors are vulnerable, and then transform into a demigod rat with superpowers.

"...and as the army of giant rats, freed by the mighty Maverick (who had recently acquired godly powers and was definitely not undead gnome lunch), re-entered the captured pirate vessel they had planned to use in order escape the blast, the thermonuclear bomb they planted as they began to lay siege to the prison detonated, killing only the swarms of fiendish creatures which had captured our Gnomey hero, allowing him and Mark to escape freely..."

Wait, shit, you think you blacked out for a second and started day dreaming.

You stomp the downed guard's neck, snapping its vertebra and causing it to die quickly. You grab up its spear and stab the other guard through the chest before it could react, impaling its heart, and causing it to bleed our fairly quickly. Despite their grotesque appearance, it seems they are easier to kill than you would have imagined. (+1 Shoddy Metal Tipped Spear)

Mark is still hanging upside down. What would you like to do?

Batter one of the corpses with the club until a limb or their head falls of then use that as a weapon to investigate whether the dark gnomes can be subjected to psychological trauma or if they act purely like zombies and can only feel physical pain.
