A Gnome's Adventure: The Continuation

Thanks to ashton1993 for the fan art!

Spoiler: More Fan Art! (click to show/hide)

You awaken next to the smoldering embers of the previous night's fire. Around you the lush green forest supports a large variety of delightful chirping birds, all of which disturb you and worsen your already considerable hangover. The sky is overcast and there is a light dusting of snow covering the landscape, including your chilled body.

You stretch, yawn, and begin rebuilding the fire, pondering the events of the night before. Intoxicated, you began an argument with the local mayor, which turned quickly into a drunken rant about the way things should be run and why the Gnomish king deserves to be exiled. You reach inside your coat for your flask and take a swig to help lessen your hangover. Alcohol, the cause, and solution, to all of life's little problems.

At any rate, it seems as if you were evicted from your hillside village, and you don't know how well you'll survive in the winter wilderness. It is unlikely you could return any time in the near future, speaking against the king is a crime in which death is a common punishment in your society, and you are lucky they gave you a chance to escape.

You take a quick stock of your supplies, noticing a sleeping bag, flint and steel, three days worth of food, a half full leather water skin that can hold six litres of water when full (you drink on average two a day), a mostly full flask of imported Dwarven wine, a medium sized bronze knife with a wooden handle, a small five year old cloth map, a brass compass, and a bag of fifty-six copper coins.

You need to decide what to do next, but more importantly, why can't you remember your name?

Name is Kilroy.

Start heading west, to see what there is to be seen.

Kilroy, that's right, it's always bothersome when you can't remember your own name in the morning. You consider heading west, but the region is unknown to you and not on your map and you don't feel ready to risk getting lost. You decide to head south to Stockton, which by your guess is probably about four days away. You are going to run out of food at some point but that isn't a big problem at the moment.

You look at your compass and find which direction is south, and start your trek to the distant town, leaving Gnome sized footprints in the snow covered ground. After several hours you decide to make camp for the night.

You figure you have a little over an hour before it gets dark, and find a suitable location to rest. You survey your surroundings:
There are sparse trees, and there are occasional patches of thick shrub growth. The snow fall has stopped but it is still growing cold quickly, you will need to build some sort of shelter or light a fire to stay warm. There is a large boulder embedded in the ground with a sizable overhang, and would make a suitable spot to build your camp. You hear a stream nearby.
You see evidence of small wildlife, most likely rabbits, and could benefit greatly if you managed to somehow catch one.

What would you like to do?

Cut off some tree and shrub branches to build a fire under the rock. Tack a quick swig of booze and go to sleep.

Use just a tiny bit of your food as bait for the rabbits, and then catch em when they got close enough.

You use your knife to cut some tree and shrub branches and put them in a pile on the ground, under the overhang of the boulder. Using your flint and steel, you spark at the pile on some dry brush until the fire is burning steadily, and then collect more wood in a pile a safe distance from the fire to feed it during the night. You decide to sit for about ten minutes perfectly still with a small amount of food in front of you, but you get sick of waiting for a rabbit to come up and just eat the bait. You probably wouldn't have been quick enough to grab it anyway. Maybe you should try to make a trap?

There is still daylight and you consider doing other things, but you decide you've had a long day and set up your sleeping bag close to the fire, under the rock.

You take a large swig of booze and lay back next to the fire, watching the sky as the daylight leaves and the stars take its place. You think of the home you're leaving, and while you weren't close to many of the people living there, it was still all you'd known for your entire life. You tend the fire until you fall uneasily to sleep.

You wake in the morning much earlier than you did the day before, once again to the sound of birds. You make note to someday live in a place without the loud creatures. It is chilly but warmer than the previous morning, and you decide that you want to stay in this area and rest for a few hours before you continue your journey.

Your water is running low but you still hear the sound of running water that must be coming from a nearby stream. There are tracks from rabbits around your sleeping bag, and worryingly also tracks of something much larger. You make a mental note that you might want to learn how to identify animals by their tracks next time you have the opportunity to talk to a hunter. You also notice that the fire is still burning slightly, and pile some more wood on it.

It's a new day, what would you like to do before you continue your journey to Stockton?

Make a Deadfall trap:

Use it to get rabbits, and also be careful of any large predators.

Using your Gnomish ingenuity you devise how to make a rabbit catching trap out of rocks, sticks, and some small vines you find growing on the ground. The basic premise of it is that a flat heavy rock is balanced on a flimsy stick, and that when the rabbit tries to eat the bait placed under it the stick will move and release the rock, crushing the rabbit.

You look around and find a bush with a few sparse clusters of blue colored berries on it. There are rabbit droppings near the bush, so you assume they eat them and use them for bait, and grab a handful for yourself. You set up a couple traps and bait then, and then consider what to do while you wait for a rabbit to try to take the bait.

Go to the stream and resupply your water. Use your knife to whittle a small wooden figurine of a gnome. Perhaps you can swindle a young or stupid human out of a few copper by claiming the craft has supernatural powers.

You decide to find the stream and resupply your water. After searching for a small amount of time, you find the clear running water and fill your water skin, as well as take a few sips strait from the source. Looking around, you notice something disturbing, a hill with a small cave in it, surrounded by large tracks like the ones you saw by your camp. The ground around it is littered with bones and there is a relatively new looking rotting carcass dragged inside.

You head back to your camp quickly after seeing this, hoping the fire would help scare away any would be predators. You decide to try to make something to hawk to some human. You take a somewhat wide diameter branch from your pile and cut it short, and begin whittling it with your knife into the shape of a Gnome.

Needing inspiration, you consider what you yourself look like. You're about three feet tall and rather frail, the typical build of a Gnome. You have a thin mustache that curls at the ends and a small pointy goatee. Your hair is curly, but not long enough for that to be very noticeable, and is a brownish gray color.

After shaping your piece of wood for about an hour, you look it over and are proud of your work. It's not the best wooden figurine, but with what you have available it's pretty decent. You tried to make it not resemble you but there are still noticeable similarities.

You suddenly hear the sound of a stone hitting the ground, perhaps it's one of your traps. What would you like to do?

Check the trap, and continue your journey regardless.

You get your hopes up and check the trap. As you approach you see what appears to be a... pink scaly tail sticking out of it? You lift the rock and confirm that you have indeed caught a large rat. Oh well, you suppose it's better than nothing.

Considering you're about to leave the area, you knock over the second trap. There's no point in it killing an animal if you're not around to get it. You pack up everything useful in the camp and look at your compass and map for a few seconds, choosing the correct direction to go.

You look at these objects a little too intently, however, because when you look up you notice a large wolf has managed to sneak within fifteen feet of you. It's staring right into your eyes and you are frozen with fear. It's still slowly creeping toward you, and you don't really have anything to defend yourself with.

What would you like to do?

Quickly slice off a large chunk of rat meat and throw it at the wolf as a distraction. Then RUN!
