Yeah, honestly I don't think many people expected a riot, and definately not one on this scale.  Truth be told everyone was well behaved during the rest of the playoff run, win or lose, and everyone was well behaved during the Olympics too, even when we didn't win gold (not that that happened much =D).  I think the cops thought that we'd learned from our mistakes, matured, and cleaned up our act.  For the most part we have, see twenty thousand people cleaning up the streets the morning after.  None of them wanted this to happen.
Personally I think the riot was started by a group of drunk fans flipping a car and setting it ablaze, but it was definately kept going for hours by a group of anarchists who have caused problems for us before and who were almost certainly there to start something whether we won or lost.  They didn't care about the game at all, in fact, they were just looking for another excuse to smash windows.
Also there were another few thousand who didn't actively participate but were still following the trouble around, taking pictures and videos and just getting in the way of the cops and firefighters.  Some good ultimately came of that; there's now a facebook page and even a VPD page set up for people to send their pictures so more rioters can be identified.

I put the blame for sparking the incident squarely on radical anarchists who showed up ready for a war - bandanas, molotovs, etc. Many of them have been arrested, and a large percentage are involved in prior events like the Toronto riots last year.

DJ's pic is pretty funny, but it slightly missed the mark because the government doesn't pay for us to see hockey. In fact, the government makes money because CBC gains more revenue, thus making it cheaper to run.

They actually DID pay good money for giant bigscreen tvs downtown during the finals.

I think every city (or country) should have these once in a while, you know, to blow off some steam, get this shit out of your system and then proceed happy and relaxed with your normal everyday life.

holy shit wow, yah that was kinda subtle until I checked the sig.

On the Vancouver note: I went to the Vancouver Aquarium this week and it seems like the downtown repair has done well, can't really tell anything happened except a few places where their window repairs aren't done (Louis Vuitton shop). I don't get out to the city proper much but everything was fairly normal.

Also, to add to the couple. There is some footage floating around of them before the pic. They were rushed by the police and beat into the ground, and the picture is of the guy 'comforting' the girl afterwards. Poor couple, getting mixed into that on their holiday.
