I really do like the general concept of this game.
It reminds me of minecraft, in some ways, in that you feel a sense of ownership for what you build. When you construct a house it is yours, and it can not be taken from you. But there is also a much stronger sense of community somehow. Part of wanting to have that house isn't to just protect you from the horrors outside, but rather to join in on a much larger town. I've seen a lot of games these days give a strong sense of spacial ownership, and others go for a sense of community, but not all achieve both at the same time. I think the private doors were a great touch, and will become an important factor later on.
Honestly, from a dev point of view, it is a very simple game, and yet very interesting. Well done.

Thanks Max!

Sometime after Quests, I'll be introducing the concept of player-run towns and fleshing out the wilderness areas. Although I admit we've got woefully few players currently, building that sense of community and being able to feel that sense of ownership over your part of the world is very important to me :)

The new user tutorial has been released! (now you talk to npcs and complete quests instead of just reading a bunch of signs).  Head over to 8BitMMO and check it out.

Also, I've uploaded a bunch of free gold tokens to the first post - enjoy!

Interesting so far, if a bit laggy at times, and I tend to see a lot of random shadows in wide open fields, but those could just be on my side.

Unfortunately I don't have too much time to poke around tonight, but I'll definitely be revisiting this tomorrow.

Thanks Astral, the game is pretty lag sensitive right now.  Outside of US west coast this gets noticeable fast.  I plan on doing A) some better latency hiding, and B) if the game ever gets big, then deploying regionalized servers to keep ping down.

Shadows - could be places where you happened to stand while shadows were generating, there's a known bug about that I need to fix ;)

I made a spiral staircase, it hurts your eyes to make one. Anyways, I want one of those Tardis's or whatever the plural of Tardis is. Keep up the great work! Oh, and I took code #8.

Thanks!

Teleporters are currently not possible to be built for users (it involves some manual processes), but I'll consider opening it up in the future :)

In the meantime, enjoy these two new devious objects if you haven't already:

Just an update that there's a bunch of new buildable objects in 8BitMMO :)

That includes:
  • Brick (full size & half size)
  • Wood (full size & half size)
  • Carpet (new sets of red and purple, and existing blue set is tuned to be more cyan to prevent it looking like water)
  • Bed
  • Table
  • Stools (originally these were chairs with backs, but the collision got complex)
  • Theft resistant grass (note the lighter shade)
You also now get 50 gold each day you login to help you with your construction projects.

Finally, I noticed these codes had not yet been redeemed:  BAY12FORUMS-3 and BAY12FORUMS-6.  Use 'em before someone else does ;)  /redeem <code> in the in-game chat.

You can now build & manage your own towns!

For details on the town system, please see this blog post, or this video.

Let me know if you have any questions :)

I'll jump on and check this out later on today. It'll be good to see what happened over the last year (although I'll be a newbie at it anyway).
