Quote from: Wiki
Tampa Bay is also the location of two major military installations, MacDill Air Force Base and Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater. MacDill AFB is home to the 6th Air Mobility Wing of the Air Mobility Command (AMC) and the 927th Air Refueling Wing of the Air Force Reserve Command (AFRC). Both wings share flight operations of a fleet of KC-135 Stratotanker aircraft. MacDill also hosts multiple tenant organizations, to include two major combatant commands: United States Central Command (USCENTCOM), which directs military operations in Afghanistan, Iraq and the middle East; and United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM), which has responsibility for all special operations forces in the US Armed Forces. CGAS Clearwater is loacted at the St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport. It is the largest air station in the United States Coast Guard, operating HC-130 Hercules aircraft and HH-60 Jayhawk helicopters with principal missions focused on search and rescue, counternarcotics interdiction and homeland security.

Key spoonfuls of alphabet soup, USCENTCOM and USSOCOM. Granted that's today and not the 80's, but in the 80's similar assets may have been present only aimed at Cuba, a Soviet satellite state.

I guess this is on topic, its a web site with FEMA's projection on probable nuclear strike targets in the USA with some explanations and postulations.

lol, North Dakota. Some of the maps are outddated, the "Dense pack" areas are not so common since the USA has since decommissioned many of the silos.

Jeez, that's insane. I don't know much about global nuclear war (thankfully?) but I wouldn't have expected them to do it like that.

It's not just the silos. Minot and Grand Forks are both home to Air Force bases. The one at Minot houses a wing of B-52s (which would carrying nukes if things went hot) and the Grand Forks one houses the 319th Air Base Wing which supplies long-distance in-air refueling support and infrastructure support to part of Strategic Air Command. Both would be high-value targets.

The strike on Bismarck is just a little "fuck you" thrown in for good measure. Probably all cities over a certain size and/or all state capitals would get at least one warhead, for maximum disruption of civil administration.

I question FEMA's North Carolina map. Growing up in High Point, we were always under the assumption that because of the nearby large gasoline holding facility and associated 40-inch pipeline which runs along the Eastern Seaboard, we had at least one shiny Soviet ICBM pointed right at us. Add to that the fact that Greensboro is the intersection of several major highways, and it makes sense as a target if only to disrupt regional transportation infrastructure.

Yeah, there are some targets that are not considered that seem sorta important and other times seemly unimportant areas are targeted. Like the cities of Ocala and Gainesville Florida are ignored.

The single nuke dropped just east of Craig, Colorado has always been a mystery to me, since there is literally nothing there, but a few ranches up in the mountains.

Some of them, like the bush villages in Alaska having ICBMs dropped on them, is probably because of a radar site or something that is likely not there anymore.

Man, I spent like 2 hours trying to find out what would be targeting there, google-maps and everything else. My guess is there is some inconspicuous communications bunker or some government thing there, or its just centered on some pass with that silly state road through the mountains just to block access through the rockies, just to be assholes.

No, that little spot all by itself? The one right over *my* house, that's a little "fuck you" thrown in for good measure, as well as an insult to Fargo. We've *always* been bigger than Bismark-Mandan, and we only get 1 projected spot? Fuck you Russia.

I would like to repeat that the map in question was produced by 100% USA guesswork* about what would be targeted by the USSR. No sense blaming Russia for it at all. I know that it was intended as a joke and as such is not offensive but still.

Over here it was kind of common knowledge that while strategic plans for cases of MAD haven't changed much, all Russian missiles had targets from at least Europe removed from the preloaded into missiles "just push the button" state in the beginning of the 90s. That was kind of yet additional measure to be sure that an accidental launch will not go straight to Paris or London. Quite likely since the Cold War most major countries made similar trade-offs between strike reaction time and global safety.

By the way classical MAD doctrine is based on inflicting "unacceptable" losses to civilians. It's the first strike that only ever cares about strategical military targets. That previous map must have been based on the assumption than Soviets would make the first strike. There are most likely a set of different maps for various other scenarios including among all thing the rumor that civilian Chinese supertankers that are always present in all large ports across the world carry among their millions of trade containers a special ordinary looking container that only the captain knows about which one it is and would unload or just "loss" into water in case of a major crisis. Severe damage to all coastal cities is a kind of "unacceptable losses" but would never constitute an effective first strike.

*+ a teaspoon of high caliber disinformation as in anything strategically military that eventually finds its way into public domain.

Let's just say that every major country has at least one or more ICBMs hidden safely in a secret base.

Considering that only six* nations are known to even possess nuclear-tipped ballistic missiles, that's unlikely. Of course, a lot of US warheads are allegedly supposed to be distributed to the other NATO powers if the balloon went up, but I don't know how much truth there is to that.

*US, Britain, France, Russia, People's Republic of China, and probably Israel

No India or Pakistan, really?

Also SAR and NK may or may not have limited capabilities. Iran if you are totally pessimistic.

As far as I know, India and Pakistan are limited to gravity bombs and possible cruise missile warheads. South Africa has been certified by UN inspectors as nuclear free. If NK has a deliverable bomb at all, let alone a third or fourth generation one that can fit on their scud-clones, I'll eat my (nonexistant) hat. That sort of thing requires testing.

Gravity bombs? Anyway, to fuck shit up you wouldn't need a bomb. Fire a rocket stuffed with radioactive material into the atmosphere and rig it to release into the air above the target. That would be a bitch.
