Remember to replace those early -doors- with proper masterwork doors once your fort is up and running and you have a legendary mason. Same with beds, chairs, tables - import wood if you have to.
Unless you make masterwork door of aluminum nuggets then it really doesn't matter. Well, it's something to do, I suppose. Decorating them with bones and gems will likely be much more useful re: happy thoughts, but then you may as well make new doors to decorate, even though it won't matter.

Edit: actually, you could get a better effect by smelting those native aluminum nuggets into metal bars and studding your mediocre doors with it.

I don't care whether it makes a huge difference, studding no-quality doors with aluminium? REALLY? Sorry, were dwarves. We do masterwork.

A no quality claystone statue, used to make a statue garden, got: "She admired a fine tastefully arranged Statue lately"

With the same savefile I modded claystone to increase its material value by 100,000 times.  Now the same no quality statue gives: "She admired a completely sublime tastefully arranged Statue lately".

So I don't think quality has anything to do with it.

With the same savefile I modded claystone to increase its material value by 100,000 times.  Now the same no quality statue gives: "She admired a completely sublime tastefully arranged Statue lately".

So I don't think quality has anything to do with it.
Quality increases value (by up to 12x for masterwork if I'm not mistaken) though, so it does have something to do with it.

Statues are relatively unique, because when put in a garden they get attention regardless.  Try coaxing dwarves through a door repeatedly, two stockpiles made to take from each other will force them to loop constantly.  If they admire a no-quality door, then we can confirm that total value matters.  If they fail to admire a no-quality door, we can acknowledge that there is a threshold that needs to be reached before admiring is possible.

Also: Take aluminum nugget, and make a bar.  Keep making and melting doors until you get masterwork.

small correction. Two stockpiles cannot funnel into each other, but three stockpiles can juggle their contents.

Statue garden counts as a designated room, which is affected by simple value of everything in it, as far as I can tell. Quality don't enters in such other than as value multipliers. I'm curious about the effect of the object quality-value themselves, not designated rooms. So that just might be pure value, as opposed to actual quality.

That said, the experiment procedure that Girlinhat sounds like good way to test it!

I placed a siltstone no-quality statue without making it a statue garden, then placed a 1x1 meeting area activity zone right next to it, so the dwarves would be likely to move past it.  Resulted in "She admired a fine Statue lately".

I've never seen "Urist has admired a mediocre door lately" so my assumption is for things of a certain quality.

Dont think so, unless you mean total quality.  Im fairly certain the quality mentioned in the thought is total quality (as opposed to core quality).  I see dwarves admire superb/sublime tables/chairs whatever all the time and none of my meeting hall stuff is better than -furniture-.

It is however tricked out with all the value 6 gems in masterwork designs.

This leads me to believe that its total quality that is influencing happiness instead of core quality which is a way to determine base value and probably a factor in total quality.  Therefore a wooden door and a gold door provide same boost provided they somehow reach the same total quality.
Im fairly certain total quality is determined from a derivation of core quality and the decorations that make it up.

I think I shall science this one and try to make a range of differing statues for my garden in a range of materials and qualities that all come very close in value.  then sit and watch thoughts to see how value/decorations and total quality link. :)

Read these two, I am fairly sure happiness from viewing an object is directly proportional to the finished (calculated overall) value of an object meaning that a balance of both base value and quality is needed, but basically, better quality = more value = happier dwarves, and you should strive to make much masterwork platinum furniture.

In which case no quality precious metal furniture without decoration should beat masterwork stone with a few cheapy master decorations since it'll still win on dorfbucks.   That should be testable somehow too, Im gonna go roll a new fort.
