Qualitry or value happiness?
« on: June 15, 2011, 07:07:37 am »

I've been watching my dwarves run around and their thoughts. Even in low-value fortresses, I see them being pleased by masterpiece wooden tables and undyed ropes.

Does value counts toward happiness, or is it just for room 'quality' counting, or does it boosts the happiness given by quality of craftmanship outside of material preference?

Dwarves are given happy thoughts when they pass next to or over expensive furniture.  Since item quality is directly related to value, higher quality items will give dwarves more happy thoughts.

When I ready "Qualitry" all I could think of is a kobold wearing a monocle.

I believe any masterwork or exceptional item can be admired, but the amount of happiness gained from it varies according to value and preferences.  If the dwarf likes shist, even those shisty little tables will make his rather happy.  Masterwork platinum gives more happiness than masterwork slate.

Does item value cause happiness when its in a stockpile or does it have to be built?

Only built.  Stockpiled items only count for eating/drinking and hauling tasks (including hauling to the workshop).

Item type and material likely still triggers the "has been satisfied at work lately" thought when hauling.

My answer to just about everything is magma. In fact, most threads end up with me running in screaming it

Remember to replace those early -doors- with proper masterwork doors once your fort is up and running and you have a legendary mason. Same with beds, chairs, tables - import wood if you have to.

Oh, my, I missed that I typoed that  :D

That's what I believes also, I'm more curious if quality matters more than value when it comes to happiness. Would a masterwork wood door knock them as high in heaven as base-quality bluemetal door studded with every other metal and encrusted with every possible gems, all of base quality?

Or is the happiness only effected at exceptional and higher? If so, how much does value boosts it?

I very much hope that our dorfs would NOT LIKE seeing good gems and metal wasted into a no-quality door ;)

I've never seen "Urist has admired a mediocre door lately" so my assumption is for things of a certain quality.

Pretty sure its all value-based. High quality does increase value, but so does more valuable materials.

You can usually tell artifacts or adamantine encrusted with diamonds by the specifier "sublimely arranged" or simply "sublime" statue bed or whatever.

OT: don't forget, bridges, wells etc have 2 value modifiers: the architect's skill and the mason's/carpenter's. if you have both a legendary, you will have shitloads of happy dorfs that admired a sublime bridge lately.
also, precious materials play a part.

Was trying to work out how to look at architect-built things' quality, figured it out through shift-r and using enter on the buildings made by those skills. It's pretty good to know  :D
