How Do I Play This?: Adventure mode!
« on: June 15, 2011, 03:35:00 am »

Anyone have any tips for a long lasting game in adventure mode? I keep on getting very high level quest to kill a big group of demons or a bandit camp. I used the quick start guide on the wiki and it helped some.

My longest lasting character was Yunther Swiftabby. He (or she) had 11 companions, slayed 5 beast (a giant by himself, a few demons, a bear, a few quest wolfs, ect) and fought of 5 camps before dying.

-you read a passage from the Journal-

-Yunther Swiftabby - Day 60 1050. Me and my large group of companions (20 was it? no 22, 11?)are to go to a goblin camp to kill a evil overlord.
-Yunther Swiftabby - day 65 1050. Me and my companions set out. We are all heavily armed and we are ready to go.
-Yunther Swiftabby - the fight is glorious, I write this behind a rock to inform people if I die. I already killed 6 goblins (or so I think) with my awesome might. my companions are hurt, but they are still fighting strong.

-Yunther later dies due to an Axegoblin harms him badly and pushes him into a deep lake, he drowns and the axeman is later mentioned in a quest. Being the friends of many civilizations, Yunther was never forgotten. All real heroes, have an end....

Dodging skill. Armor user. Shield user. High agility. Fighting.

Seriously, those are how you survive here.

Fighting tactically helps too.

I can often slay entire groups of mobs just by watching my footing and going for precise attacks to disable my foes.

Cutting off feet and hands is a great way to eliminate a threat. They can't fight back effectively without a weapon, and they can't chase after you if they have no legs :)

I also found that Creatures of the Night and other monsters seem to be the only things you can hew in half by slashing at the lower body. If you have a normal or better hit chance with a square or better landing blow on the lower body on a mystical being, attack it with a slash and there's a good chance you'll cut them right in half.

Dodging and sheild, my friend. Dodging and sheild...

Then, aim for the head. ALWAYS, aim for the head.

Unless you can't hit it, then try to cut off their arms... Or strangle him to a point where you WILL hit their head.

Also, I don't bother with Companions... I can do it myself, and don't need them in the way.

Killed a camp of 23 dwarfs alone, by just watching my footing.

So you never travel at night?

You mean you're actually SCARED of the boogeymen?

In my games, THEY are scared of ME.

They run with their tails between their legs, and rarely come back.

Also, if they're soo scary, just seek refuge on the mountains, or the shores... They won't ambush you there, and you can sleep peacefully.

Note, however, they WILL follow you there, just not start the ambush there.

1) Hit the leg. They fall which doubles your attack.
2) Hit the weapon hand.
3) Do whatever you want :P.

Also, if you truly want to survive, knowing when to flee a downhill battle is a good thing.

He who fights and runs away, lives to fight another day!

It's a game of tactics.

Try make a demi-god hero and just put a lot of skill points into what you think are useful skills.

You can (how I survived a lot of battles) just increase throw a lot and then throw things.

But basically... fight logically. If you're fighting a non-flying creature: legs first.
If you have a good wrestling skill then you can just grab their nect/throat (with your hand, not with your arm), then choke them and then knock them out through strangulation... then just kick in the head till they die.

What exactly are you having trouble with, though?

I always end up killed in my sleep by bandit ambushes. Any good ways to avoid that?

Put all points into your weapon skill of choice at the start.

Travel around and look for a groundhog/buzzard.

Remove (P) your weapon and leave your shield on.

(C) Change combat preferences, stand ground on the bottom two.

Hold . If it doesn't repeat, go to options, controls/keys, look for adventurer controls "Wait" and turn it to instantaneous repeat.

Bluetac your . key or something, find a way to have it repeat without you holding down the button, you can probably use a program but I use a bottle cap and a watch on top of that.

Go read a book, watch TV, exercise or make food, when you come back in 10-30 Minutes you should have legendary, perhaps multiple times over, as I understand getting Legendary 11+ Is better than Legendary 5+ But the exact effects of a higher legendary combat skill evade me right now.

It's best to do this when you have at least a helmet on, you could do it when you have a full steel set on you, that way you train your armor user skill as well, but from my knowledge armour user increases your speed the higher it is, reducing encumbrance effects (very important imo, as being able to attack .5 More times than pretty much anything is a huge advantage when you take into consideration opportunity).

This is cheesy and broken, you will have a superman-like character if you leave it there long enough and be able to punch out Cthulhu.

Weapon skills are harder to train or rather take much more time than any defence skill because of this way of training them, you can reach legendary+20 On all your defence skills twice before you could reach legendary from nothing on any weapon skill (except hammer skills because flesh balls are an option), so it's easier to pump one up to grand master and go from there.

Also this happens to massively increase your fighter skill too which is always good as I believe it increases your opportunities? Not sure what, but I do know that someone with master fighter will consistently beat an otherwise equal opponent in arena.

I kept getting very high level quest like to kill a bandit camp that was very well armed and I always had trouble with large scale combat.

Before you engage in anything, (S)neak, look around in sneak mode for rangers specifically and count how many there are, when you're done pick the one furthest away or out of sight of the other units if there is one possible.

After you kill him, run behind a nearby tree of which it's grey cone will appear, if your tree actually blocks all of the troops in the area from seeing you, you can begin to (S)neak again, but be sure to move away from that spot as soon as you can because the units head to the last spot they saw you at, you can also use z-levels to do this, if you go down a ramp in a ditch you'll find blindspots, use them.

By sneaking this way you can pick off all rangers in the area, and then proceed to do melee with the main force.

Kite them (move away after you aim attack one which comes in range) if you want to be safer, only attack if you have a clear shot on a leg.

Repeat this, eventually it becomes 1v1 As enemies are one-shot, incapacitated, die of blood loss or flee in fear...

Against things that feel pain, daggers work, they chip bone, chipping bone gives extreme pain and causes things to pass out which is basically leaving them at your complete mercy.

As long as you engage to 1 on 1 Combat you have an extremely good chance to win any confrontation.

If you notice in stores, there are training weapons to be traded for. If you have a crippled enemy, swap to the training weapon, and proceed to whack on it.
