A transfer of power is never easy - especially not with a coup. The people are drunk with revolutionary zeal and new freedoms, the hated, oppressive regime cast from power and a new Free Republic proclaimed. But a government refuses to form as different factions bicker for power, and inside fractures threaten the fate of the entire revolution. The administration, inherited from the old government, is inefficient and corrupt, filled with layers and layers of pointless bureaucracy. The old regime maintained vast organizations of secret police, spec ops and paramilitary forces, who all now find themselves without jobs. Many turn to mercenary work or organized crime, or head off-world to work for another power. The old holders of power are fleeing for their lives off-world, or have already, while the public continues to demand them brought to justice. Confusion and panic reign on the streets. The economy stands on the verge of collapse.

The young Republic simply doesn't have the resources needed to contain the situation. Bounty hunters and mercenaries are being hired by the hundreds to catch fleeing members of the old regime and to stop the rapidly-growing crime syndicates and massive gangs. At the same time, foreign powers are more than eager to dig their claws into the planet's core for their own purposes, and the same crime syndicates and organizations aren't above hiring their own hunters.

In other words, everybody is hiring.

Rules and System

The basic RTD rules are in effect, rolls of 1 to 6. I don't think there's any need to explain those.

However, there are a few things you need to know about the combat system. A majority of missions are going to be spent pursuing your prey, and it's good to know that if you attempt to fire when you are running, your target gains a bonus to dodge. Everyone is also harder to hit when running. This means that if you attempt to fire at a running target while also running yourself, you receive a double penalty.

Most weapons are also less effective at long ranges, but don't expect that to come into play that often. I couldn't get AsciiDraw to work so I have to rely on mental maps.

Missions
The game is built around different types of missions. You receive targets (not always people, though) from different sources, from the new government to underground crime syndicates. Most missions have specific parameters you have to follow if you want to retrieve your bounty. As you complete and take these missions, your reputation with different factions changes. For example, killing an important mafia boss is sure to anger the crime syndicates - unless, of course, you acted in complete secrecy.

You have limited inventory slots, and have to choose your equipment carefully for every target based on the details and parameters of the task. Of course, you can always scavenge for ammo and such on the field, but your more high-tech gadgets aren't found just anywhere.

General Dalia yl Rochen
An old friend of Subject 971, Dalia has risen in the ranks due to her heroic service in the resistance before the coup. She's in charge of the new Republican Guard and protection of the city, and determined to cleanse the city of the powerful crime syndicates and gangs.

Consul Mona yl Vsiri
The Consul of the Free Republic rose to power by popular vote - or, specifically, chanting mobs at the doors of the old regime just before the coup. A famous philantropist and diplomat who suffered imprisonment at the hands of the Old Regime for her political views, Mona is a skilled politican and master orator who enjoys steady support throughout her government. It remains to be seen if anyone can tackle the mass corruption, spiralling crime rate and foreign pressure spawned by the collapse of the old regime, but she seems to be the best person for the job. Her survival is seen as imperative by the Guard, who have taken the liberty of assigning both men from their own ranks and hired Blood Pact mercs at her sides and equipping her with a top-of-the-line Zuche personal shield.

Fashuk il-Maldas
A diplomat of the Sikhet Federation, he runs the largest smuggling operation on the planet on the side. It is unclear if he's acting on orders of the Federation or simply for his own profit. Considered a charismatic, 'silver-tongued' man, he enjoys great popularity both at home and on the planet. His death, apparently at the hands of a few lowlife muggers, attracted much media attention and started a clean-up campaign in the district.

Slomon yl Eos
Also known as the 'Butcher of Victory Plaza', Slomon infamously ordered several airstrikes against protesting civilians on Victory Plaza. He was also known for his ruthless methods in upkeeping the law, including burning down an entire forest just to smoke out a few outlaws and straight-out ordering his officers to rape their captives. After the regime fell, went into hiding, organizing terrorist attacks all over the planet from behind the scenes.

Sebastian yl Terra
The 'Black Baron', also called the 'Hound of Zahal', was an infamous operative of the old regime, bought from a slave pit in the slums of Earth by Besch Zahal, an old leader of the regime. Zahal subjected him to half a dozen genetical engineering treatments and tests, building him up into a super-intelligent and super-obedient hound dog. He actually designed his own starship, which the regime paid for and was assigned to lead the regime's naval forces. The Baron was thought to have died when the regime fell, but reports have been coming in of his attacks in the north.

Father Kosh
Father Kosh was an old regime governor and military officer who used his power and wealth to create an army of fanatics loyal only to him and his enigmatic religious creed, reportedly possessing inhuman charisma and persuasion. These fanatics would do anything he told them to, including slaughtering protesters and rebels with frightening glee. Fears of a coup attempt by him were rampant in the late stages of the old regime, but the popular uprising put a stop to that. Father Kosh, like most of the old regime, disappeared in the chaos of the fall, but a recent statement of the Republic claims he's been killed by an elite team of Republican Guards.

Republican Guard
The first professional army of the new regime, the Republican Guard is mostly made up of the best and most experienced of revolutionaries. Commander Dalia's training regimes are known to be incredibly demanding and intensive, and deserve their 'Training From Hell' nickname. Currently, the Guard is preparing for a major campaign against the biggest gangs of the city. This has earned a fair amount of criticism from outer cities, with their own, sometimes more serious problems.

The standard Guardsman is not heavily-armed, equipped with a RUS Accelerator Carbine, a pair of grenades and a simple knife. Guard tactics focus on mobility and speed, demanding high skill and iniatitive from squad leaders. They are often supported by highly-mobile APC's and speeders. The elites of the Guard, the so-called Hounds, who are tasked with the safety of important public figures including the current Consul, are invididually specialized and equipped with the latest gear and equipment, and have access to various heavy vehicles and support.

The Guard is split into four divisions, with another few support elements that usually support law enforcement in heavy-combat situations. Their barracks are located on the city outskirts inside several interlinked walled compounds.

Blood Pact
One of the biggest outfits of hired guns and private security in existance, the Blood Pact are famous for their iron discipline and physical fitness - going as far as to refuse any augments and implants that might boost their physique without any actual practice. Business deals with SychTech and the Golgo company ensure their supply of high-quality weapons and armor. The name of the company comes from a blood-letting ritual performed on each new recruit when they finish training.

Blood Pact are popular choices for bodyguards and small-scale ops, which has given birth to a myth about their 'low' numbers - in reality, estimates on Blood Pact strenght place them in the 200 000 - 500 000 range, not counting support personnel and fleet crews. They are based on the world of Hychis in the Mennar Stars, and operate a fleet of warships used mostly for orbital support and hit-and-run tactics.

Your average Blood Pact soldier is highly professional and combat-savvy, trained to fight in a variety of enviroments and used to on-the-spot tactics and thinking. Their basic armament includes a light-weight SychTech automatic pistol and SMG and a heavier support weapon. More experienced troops and elites often come decked in superheavy armor and personal heavy weapons, with a wide variety of explosives and specialist gear. Blood Pact are used to working with minimal amounts of back-up and fire support and can 'go guerilla' for years if need be.

Combat Knife - A simple blade used by many militaries in close combat. 1d10 Damage at Close Range.

Thermal Blade - An expensive assassination tool. Easily conceable and extremely effective, it burns through any armor with ease. Has a somewhat short energy charge. 2d20 Damage at Close Range. 8 Uses.

Golgo Mechanical Blade - A devastating, over-heavy chainsword, shunned by real professionals. Prone to jamming from flesh and bone stuck in the machinery. 2d10 Damage at Close Range.

RUS4 'Snaplock' Automatic Pistol - A common light-weight sidearm with a high rate of fire. Meant for close quarters combat, and useless at long range. 2d8 Damage at Close Range, 1d8 at Long Range. 8 'Shots' Per Clip.

Aurora AU25 Revolver - A powerful and accurate pistol popular with mercenaries. 3d12 Damage at Close Range, 2d12 Damage at Long Range. 6 Shots Per Clip.

'Widowmaker' Shotgun - The ubiquitous shotgun, with hundreds of thousands of copies and versions all across the sector. It's block-like, sturdy silhoutte is known to all, and it's the standard 'bad guy' weapon in entertainment. Cheap and easy to manufacture and simple to use, not to mention quite effective, it has variants for almost all races and sentients of the known world. 2d20 Damage at Close Range, 1d4 at Long Range. 7 Shots Per Clip.

RUS2 Accelerator Carbine - A flexible assault rifle and the standard weapon for the military of the old regime. Effective both at long and close ranges. 2d20 at All Ranges. 14 'Shots' Per Clip.

Zuche 4 Railgun - A high-tech marksman's rifle beloved by gun nuts and mercenaries all around the world. Comes with a reactive targeting device which calculates the exact point to shoot for the owner. 10d10 Damage at All Ranges, -1 to Enemy Dodge. 1 Shot Per 'Clip'.

Flare Gun - A simple pistol that stuns targets for a few moments with an extremely bright flare. Stuns for 1d4 turns. Can hit multiple targets. 1 Shot Per 'Clip'.

Industrial Cutting Laser - A tool of heavy industry, designed to cut through thick sheets of metal. Short range, but devastating firepower. 2d100 Damage at Close Range. 8 Uses per Core.

NTT Inferno - A light-weight SMG, with a large clip. No longer produced outside private manufactories. 2d20 Damage at Close Range. 1d20 Damage at Long Range. 26 'Bursts' per Clip.

RUS7 Missile Launcher - A military-grade RPG used by the old regime. 10d10 Damage. 1 Shot Per 'Clip'.

SychTech Flechette Shotgun - A shotgun that sends explosive, needle-like flechettes everywhere. Used widely by more sadistic mercenaries. 1d50 Damage at Close Range, can hit multiple people. 10 Shots Per Clip.

Golgo HMG - A powerful heavy machinegun used to provide suppressing fire as friendly troops advance. The large drum-like magazine allows for long continous fire. 2d30 Damage at Close Range, 1d60 at Long Range. Suppresses the enemy. 22 'Bursts' in Magazine.

Carver-Delta SMG - A simple-to-use SMG with myriad variations for many different species. Lightweight and easily conceable. 1d30 Damage at Close Range. 1d20 Damage at Long Range. 10 'Bursts' Per Clip.

Paragon Combat Rifle - A human-produced reliable semiautomatic rifle. Used by most branches of Earth's military. 5d10 at Close Range. 2d20 at Long Range. 10 Shots Per Clip.

Taranta Black Flame Gun - A black-market favorite, the Taranta Black is modelled after old military flamethrowers. It throws up a gout of white-hot flames that often engulf the target entirely. 1d40 at Close Range. No Long Range. 4 Bursts Per Canister. Does 1d10 damage for 1d6 turns afterwards.

SychTech Pulse Carbine - A new SychTech release, the Pulse Carbine can be shot at varying power levels, making it popular with law enforcement and bounty hunters, despite its overall low damage output even at the highest level. Level 1: Stun for 1d3 turns. Level 2: 1d12 at Close Range, 1d4 at Long Range. Level 3: 1d30 at Close Range, 1d8 at Long Range. 8 Shots Per Cylinder.

Frag Grenade - An explosive grenade manufactured by various companies. 4d20 Damage, can hit multiple targets. Grenade.

Zuche 13 Gravity Trap - A small grenade which generates a short-lived gravity field which can be used to imprison targets in place. {i]Stuns for 2d4 turns. Can hit multiple targets. Grenade.

Zuche 20 Shock Mine - A non-lethal device that paralyzes those unfortunate enough to go near it. Stuns for 2d6 turns. Can hit multiple targets. Mine.

Golgo Shrapnel Mine - A high-explosive mine outlawed on several worlds. Designed on purpose to create enormous amounts of superheated shrapnel. 5d20 Damage. Can hit multiple targets. Mine.

RUS8 HE Mine - A military-use mine of the old regime. Popular with the gangs and crime syndicates of the planet. 4d20 Damage. Can hit multiple targets. Mine.

RUS10 Breaching Charge - A focused explosive used by spec ops teams of the old regime. Can be used against doors or walls or as a conventional explosive. 10d10 Damage. Cannot be thrown. Cannot hit multiple targets.

SychTech Gas Grenade - A technically outlawed grenade that releases a fast-spreading cloud of deadly gas. Spreads easily with wind, so gas mask recommended for user. 2d20 Damage every turn in cloud. Grenade.

Aurora TUO5 Smart Bomb - A homing mini-missile that avoids obstacles and arcs behind cover. Very expensive to mass-produce, so not in wide use. 3d30 Damage, follows targeted enemy. Cannot hit multiple people. Explosive.

Aurora TU06 Smart Trap - A variant of the Smart Bomb, this immobilizes with a gravity trap instead of killing. Stuns for 1d12 turns, follows targeted enemy. Cannot hit multiple people. Explosive.

RUS9 Incendiary Grenade - Alongside a normal explosion, sets the targets on fire. Makes up for smaller explosion by continuing to inflict damage for a while afterwards. 3d20 Damage at detonation, 2d6 Damage for 1d4 turns afterwards. Can hit multiple targets. Grenade.

Zuche 15 Tracking Drone - A small robotic drone that follows the designated target from afar. Widely used by the secret police of the old regime, now officially outlawed. Follows targeted enemy.

Target Beacon - A small cylinder with a powerful electrical charge. Immobilizes conscious targets. Used for signalling that the target is ready for pick-up. Not always useable. Device. Does not take up inventory slots.

Zuche 19 High-Power Visor - Allows clear vision at long range with powerful binoculars, identifies targets and scans their weapons and capabilities. Device. Does not take up inventory slots.

Zuche 3 Cloaking Device - A machine that provides the user with short invisibility, though only to the plain eye. Cloaks for 1d6 turns. 6 Uses. Device.

First Aid Kit - A simple, mass-produced pack used in case of emergency. Replenishes 15 HP. Destroyed after use.

Zuche 11 Regeneration Device - A prototype invention from Zuche that repairs wounds and injuries, in use by several mercenary groups. 10 HP regeneration for 1d8 turns. 1 Use.

Name: Taric Taiservi
Gender: Male
Appearance: A 176cm high bipedal lizard. Green scales. Wears armour over most of his body.
Background: Former Regime Operative.
Starting Implant: Focus Improvement Package
History: Taric was a former special forces operative, having a fairly large killcount. He isn't unsympathetic to the new regime or the revolution (Bureaucracy means a lot of paperwork if the wrong target is taken). He is however nationalistic, more than willing to kill foreigners on a word. He's known for being a bit of a looter, scavenging whatever he can find now that his regular paycheck has ran out.

You start with 75. In comparison, the basic enemy mook has about 15 HP.

Appearance:  Human, of slightly below average height and lean build.  Wears dark grey clothing with no visible colors.  Has a forgettable face, except that his eyes are always darting around.  A bit twitchy.
Background:  Former Regime Operative
Starting Implant:  AugeanTech LightningBolt Pack
History:  An assassin from the old regime, Systar prefers to get as close as possible to his target and eliminate them quickly.  For him, speed is king, and everything else is secondary.  Now out of a job, he turns to the highest bidder to secure fortune the best way he knows how: killing people quickly.  If no one can run away from him, they cannot survive him.

His personal life is a mystery, as are his motivations- aside from money.

Former Regime Operative
Has a huge network of informants and many weapons and gadgets leftover from his/her old job, but is distrusted by the new Republic and downright hated by the general public if they find out who they used to be.

Foreign Mercenary
Years of experience as a mercenary and bounty hunter and tons of high-tech weapons and equipment available, but knows nothing of the planet or it's factions, and is treated as a psycho for hire at best by the new regime.

Inexperienced Revolutionary
Absolutely perfect relations with the new government and the general public, but lacks the fancy gear of the previous two.

Name: Gaosaron el-Anaula Ra'Vantahin
Gender: Male
Appearance: Perhaps the best way to describe Gaosaron's race is bee-like. Not completely true, but they are tall beings covered in black-striped chitin (Gao's is dark red) with thin yet flight-capable wings (at least over short distances, anyway). Where the description is not accurate is in failing to note the other four arms the race possesses and the fact that the head more resembles a rhinocerous than a bee. Of course, this also means that Gao is a herbivore.

History (optional): Gaosaron, like all of his kind, is a mercenary for one reason: to improve his standing in society. The more fame a Vantahin acquires, the greater his social standing, which means he is allowed to have more property and a larger harem. Since Gao's only completed ten or twenty missions here and there, he's still low on the totem pole. His full name means "Gaosaron son of Anaula Caste-Twelve Vantahin," with the lowest caste being the fifteenth. Most advance to the fourteenth caste in their teens, but it's rare for most Vantahin to survive long enough to make it above caste nine. Those that make it above five are the leaders of society; Gao plans to make it all the way to caste one.

Just pointing this out, but If the Gao's race happens to be insectoid wouldn't it be the females leading and fighting?
