Lock up in Fortress mode
« on: November 10, 2007, 03:56:00 am »

I having a bug where DF locks up during goblin invasions and just recently with a bronze colossus.  Things will run fine at first, and eventually lag to a non-responding game requiring it to be turned off.  If I wait long enough, 5 or so minutes, during the lock ups, the game catches back up.

Maybe it's a system issue, but my PC is quite new.  Crashes like this did not happen in the pre October 27th versions.

Did anyone die during the attacks? If many dwarves died, it likely caused some of your dwarves to become unhappy or miserable, and this causes horrific lag-spells.

I don't know what the cause was, probably the iron man attack that killed three of my dwarves. Or the ettin I trapped in a pit (more on that in another topic). At some point, DF started to freeze whenever I changed levels. Forced alt-tabbing with some fiddling (simply alt-tabbing didn't work) got it running again, until another change of level. I (kinda stupidly, now that I think of it) abandoned the fort, so can't reproduce it now. I have the save at the fort's start (or a copy of it, anyways), which was also bugged - some error crashed DF when it was making the initial save. When I loaded the fort though, it ran fine. I'll see if the problem repeats itself...  Or if the second save works at all..

A lot of people did die, but that can't be the problem exclusively.

I have had goblin invasions that create bad lag as well.  Even when they're just standing around outside my walls.  I just observed similar slowdown just now had a large pack a wolves came on to the map.

It seems related to hostiles on the play field.  Large amounts of dwarves and traders do not seem to contribute greatly to lag.

Could it maybe be related to tile sets or something?
