Goblins seem to live more than a thousand years

I dunno if this is a bug or not, but I was playing in adventure mode and when looking at several engravings of the high priest I had just killed I noticed that he had been elected in the year 38 [?!]

So what exactly is the lifespan of a goblin supposed to be here?

If I recall rightly Toady's mentioned that Goblins don't die naturally of old age as they're all fated to suffer a gruesome demise.
