I should state that this ISN'T a religious statement. It falls under the rules of ettiquete which goes

"Never speak of politics or religion"

I've heard it before. Also I am sure there is a third thing in there but I cannot think of it.

Something like don't argue about politics, religion, or with drunks. At least that is what I know.

Of course, that is not true, drunks are hilarious to talk to.

It's generally because the other side immediately perceives what you say as an attack. I get on just fine with just about every viewpoint imaginable, but if I state my views plainly and bluntly, they'd hate my guts. In the same way, depending on how one puts it (and I can think of one very specific instant on this forum that's my only warning, although it was self-reported and half-hearted) where someone was so offensive that I flamed his ass very very badly over a point that I'd generally agree with.

If you ever start a discussion with either the words (or more importantly the reasoning in your mind) "you guys are wrong because" the odds of a good ending decrease as dramatically as my mood at certain berserk buttons.

No, we can't discuss religion. It will end badly.

The word 'religion' seems to always have people stereotyping something that in fact has great variety. There are many religions and every person has their own way of perceiving their religion, so in a way, everybody has their very own religion. Thus, while one Christian is a creationist another might not be. People are also different, not every religious person will do what is said in the OP and some may choose to use rash arguments while others are perfectly open to having a logical discussion about their beliefs.

Then let's talk about headless monk? Shall we? Anyone watching Doctor who? There is a interesting setting that in the future, the clerics are like professional soldiers, and defending the worlds with faith and force. Sounds interesting?

The challenge to an evolutionary formation is this: it must provide an analysis that at least comes close to matching the power of the neoclassical theory to predict and illuminate the macro-economic patterns of growth

I just wanted to say that I'm a big supporter of the "Don't speak of politics and religion in polite conversation." line of thought.

An interesting point; people who follow a certain religion may refuse to do something because it is against their religion, and that is not a problem, so should someone not also be able to refuse to do something because of their morality, and receive the same treatment?

Ultimately this brings up a few far more base question; is there a difference between ones private morality and an organized religion? If so, when does something go from being a system of beliefs and become a religion, should atheists not be able to refuse to do something based on those beliefs, just as religious people can?

Um. Yes they should I guess. Although honestly I can not think of any where where it is not like that.

Enter the mission statement of atheism: Atheism is not a religion. Atheism is not a morality. Atheism holds to no beliefs except the belief that there is no divinity.

I am honestly surprised I have to be the one to bring this up, having had it thrown in my face so often.

Just because atheism has nothing to do with morality does not mean that atheists do not hold a morality and can refuse to do things that violate it. That was what was meant.

Sorry for the double-post, I realise that I read what was being said wrong.

However, what is being asked is such a can of worms due to the ability to abuse it that I am not going to get into it.

Preedit: and then I was ninja'd while typing.
