An idea to combat dwarven obesity.
« on: June 13, 2011, 03:03:53 pm »

After a few years, im noticing all my dwarves get really really fat.
in an attempt to combat this, I'm making everything out of lead.

anyone think the extra effort involved in hauling will keep my dwarves in shape?

why or why not?

If you make everything out of platinum they'll still stay fat.
It's just genetics, you got more fat dwarves who have useless jobs. So they idle. The more they idle the more they become friends with people. Then they'll eventually get in a romance and you get a baby dwarf. That baby dwarf grows up to become a fat dwarf, spreading it's fatness to other dwarves.
Luck also plays a part in it.

I'm somewhat new. Is there any actual downside to fat dwarves?

Fire helps, it tends to melt fat...

Although really, the fat affords protection.  The flying ({silver arrow}) hits the woodcutter in the upper body, bruising the fat!

Stop food production for a few months...

... Or years...

Agility is unrelated to fatness.

They're not muscular.
Fat is okay for civilians with the cushioning and all, but muscular for military. All the way.

To OP:
I don't think it'll help. I'm pretty sure they'll just tire out after the first few hauls because it took so long. Though that can be okay if you have nothing for them to do anyway.

Pump gym?  I used to make those for 40d so I could have super agile, tough and strong civilians.

You need to make said elf leather into the most amazing work of art.  Embed it with every kind of gem you have, stud it with metals, and sew images into it.  Erect a shrine outside your fort with that in the center.  Let the elves know that you view their very skin as naught more but a medium for your dwarves to work on.

I have a militia commander who's super strong and agile and still is really fat.  I guess there's nothing we can do to stop it.  =P

Fat is induced via eating.  It has a token on it like "gains mass with nourishment" or something.  It doesn't decrease with exertion.

I take it this would mean that constant exertion solves obesity (or at least prevents it).

I'm pretty sure they also tire more quickly.
