Let's Play Aurora Together
« on: June 13, 2011, 01:24:40 pm »

I've long wanted to do a multiplayer Let's Play in which the players are not only competing with each other, but trying to do their best to look like they are all the best of friends while backstabbing each other and stealing their toys. Most games just don't have the mechanics for it, and neither does the one I've chosen. So I'm adding them in, and will make them up on the fly when needed. Without further ado...

Let's Play Paranoia Aurora Together!

Aurora is interesting, to say the least. The level of detail is far more than your typical 4x space wargame. You can specify how much boom you want your missiles to have, how far your sensors see into the eternal night, and I'm pretty sure you ship commanders suffer leadership penalties if they forgot to use deodorant that morning. If you want a war IN SPACE, this is your game. Unfortunately, I find it boring as hell playing on my own, so that's where you come in.

For those of you who have played with Aurora before, this attempt at multiplayer will not be quite what you are used to. I can't very well let players react to every little thing and make changes on the fly as they can on their own, or we'd never get anywhere. To make sure we actually get off the ground without being bogged down in detail I'm adding in a few rules to automate some things and keep you guessing as to what the hell is really going on.

Spoiler: The Rules (click to show/hide)

Game Setup

It's a conventional start, except that Trans-Newtonian tech has been researched for all of you. I want four players, so blame can easily be shifted, and there is plenty of plotting. Each player will be set up with the exact same amount of buildings, population, etc. However, each will be given an advantage in a certain area. My ideas on this are construction rate, shipbuilding rate, research rate, and mining rate. I'll randomize who gets what so there's a bit of a surprise. If you please, pick a name for your nation when you sign up. Once we get sorted out who's playing, I'll exchange email addresses with you all, and we'll get on with it.

Questions and suggestions would be much appreciated, though signups moreso.

Sounds like a very interesting concept!

How much detail would you be expecting from each player?

General directions or more detail?

This looks quite fun. Quite fun indeed.

So long as we're not expected to give overly detailed instructions (It's been a while since I've played), I believe I shall join as the Greater Chinese Empire. Pity about those devastating earthquakes killing off an unknown number of our citizens over the last few years.

The more detailed you get, the more likely I am to do what you want. However, you say something like 'Go patrol Alpha Centauri', and I'll do my best to do that, while keeping in mind things like maintenance, ammo, and any other secondary goals you set. Basically, I want to cut the crap out and, in general, keep things away from micromanagement of task forces for players. If you want to get ultra specific, you're welcome to, but it is not required.

For stuff like research, and especially weapon and ship design, that is totally up to you. You'd probably need a copy of Aurora and a testing game with only the technologies you have in game to design and such.

Just because I think it would be a lot of fun to play with you guys!

I'll go for a New British Empire

Space Monarchy for the win?

EDIT: A GOLDEN SPACE MONARCHY IT IS!
(I should pay more attention >.<)

Think I can get away with bumping it up to 8 players, and duplicating the advantages. Any more than that, and I expect I'll be swamped. Glad there's some interest in this.  :D

EDIT: Sorry Knave, Nirur beat you to red.

If there's a slot left, I'll claim it for the Star Federation.

No game of backstabbery can be complete without the Space Illuminati!

The faction which must exist, but nobody can prove their existence!

I'm so IN!  I'll play the Family, an anarchist/hippie society that was created on the ashes of the United States after the Greater Depression. (Yeah, set my government to Anarchy and give me a black flag please.)

((Also, how the hell was I in the player list? Did I join somewhere else?))

Since nobody else has done it, I will found Space Incorporated.

Space Inc. began as a small shipping firm and grew into a monolithic transportation and utilization empire, led by a visionary named Don Quixote. While some say the man was mad, others speak of his incredible foresight and planning ability as the key to Space Inc. success in the global markets. Now, as a multi-billion dollar megacorporation, Space Inc. has purchased a small country to use as a springboard to intra- and extra-solar activities with a focus on mineral exploitation and commercial shipping.
