18th of Hematite, year 104

We received a letter from mountain home, signed by the King himself! In the letter he stated his concerns about the change of attitude towards the prisoners. That change won't be tolerated and we must return things as they were in the beginning. On the other hand he was delighted for the news about the discovery of adamantine and if we are able to change the attitude before the liaison arrives next time we may be granted the status of barony.

Stronghammer thought that we should heed the order of our King, and thus the proper actions will be taken immediately. The first thing he ordered was to deny any mundane work from anybody who is not prisoner. This includes hauling as well, though we are allowed to recover patients and feed them. Everything else must be left for prisoners.

In the letter there were also instructions about the children migrating or born here. Every children must be treated like prisoner unless we see some kind of potential in them. It sounds harsh but we must obey the orders if we want to have the support of mountain home.

26th of Hematite, year 104

Stronghammer demands some large gems to be produced. We don't have any jewelers here so he went and picked one jobless prisoner. He didn't seem to care that the production of large gems is more about luck than skill, even though skill does has some part in it. And drafting prisoner without any skill is not going to increase the probability of getting large gems. That means it's just about luck.

12th of Malachite, year 104

Another group of prisoners arrived to our fortress today. Five prisoners, escorted with priestess and personnel. The prisoners consisted of three food processors, bone carver and lad with skills in strand extraction. The last dwarf was immediately drafted to work with adamantine and one of the three originals extractors was released from duty and moved to work in forges, as his skills in making weapons is legendary due the artifact tin axe he produced some time ago.

20th of Malachite, year 104

There has been sighting of minotaur just northeast from us! And we have our back wide open due the construction of housing tower!
Stronghammer ordered the construction to be halted and everybody not belonging to militia get inside as fast as they can. We will close the front gate and force the minotaur to enter our fortress from back, in our terms. Perhaps we may pull this off with careful placement of archers and melee soldiers.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

22nd of Malachite, year 104

We stationed our archers at the top of the stairs, ready to launch the cloud of bolts towards the minotaur as soon as it gets close enough. Our melee soldiers were stationed on the ground level, ready to engage the beast if the bolts were not enough.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The plan worked just as we thought and the minotaur didn't even consider checking our front gate for possibility to enter. When it came to the firing range our archers released deadly cloud of iron bolts towards it.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The bolts did not harm the creature much but were good enough distraction so that our only melee soldier who was able to reach the spot in time was able to engage it. Few slashes from the axe was enough to wound the minotaur, and with the combination of axe slashes and iron bolts the minotaur finally fell.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The melee soldier, a lass called Tombvisions, was given the credit of killing the beast, which was only right thing to do. Perhaps the last hit was done by bolts, nobody was sure what eventually killed that thing, but the most damage was done by the slashes of iron axe, so the credit was obviously given to Tombvisions.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The workers are again allowed to go outside, and the soldiers will return to their daily routines. I heard that Stronghammer consulted Niney during the battle about the options of faster building, though the results of that meeting are still unknown to me. The important thing here is that our fortress is safe again, that's the only thing that matters right now.

4th of Galena, year 104

As the official historian of this fortress my duty is also record the births that has taken place here. I know that there has been several in the past, but my concern is the present and future, not what happened before.

With that I'm proud to record the birth of young girl. Her parents are me and my wife Scalykeys, one of the archers. The baby girl is our third child and second daughter. I'm feeling myself so proud!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The unfortunate thing is that at least for now Stronghammer has shown no interest towards the future of our little girl, and so her destiny is to live among the prisoners as soon as she grows to adulthood. While I'm saddened by this I'm confident that she will gain the respect required to raise from the prisoners to respectable part of the controlling dwarves. I will do everything I can to ensure it, this is something I swear in these official historical recordings of Evercage!

18th of Galena, year 104

The human caravan arrived to our fortress today. I was there when Stronghammer negotiated with them. They didn't have much that interested us, though we still bought some metal, barrels, cages and alcohol. And bolts, though unfortunately those were made from bronze and copper. At least that's better than nothing, surely there will be some use for those as well.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We also have our own tax collector. As our wealth has increased enormously lately Stronghammer saw that we must have someone who collects proper taxes from workers. Of course nobody who is either personnel, priest or guard are required to pay taxes. So it's only for prisoners. This is another method to widen the gap between prisoners and everybody else. The new tax collector is personnel called Tongshailed, a dwarf who came with the last group of prisoners. Don't know why Stronghammer decided to promote him instead of someone else, though I'm sure he has his reasons.

19th of Galena, year 104

The alarm was sounded as one of our children was ambushed by the squad of goblins just east from the mountain.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Everybody were ordered inside, though unfortunately there was nothing that could be done to save the poor child.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

After the goblins had slaughtered the child they rushed towards the entrance. Our archers were stationed at the walls, shooting bolts towards the invaders, and our melee soldiers were stationed just inside the front yard to meet and slaughter anything that would get past the traps and archers.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The battle was messy, and just when we thought that there was only one goblin left, incapable to move due the wounds caused by our weapon traps, when another squad of goblins were spotted near the traps.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The battle was fierce but goblins had no chance, even with such a great number, against our mighty warriors. Eventually five remaining goblins, five goblins from a group of twenty, remained standing. Apparently the slaughter was too much for them, and as each and every were injured, they begun to flee east. Of course were weren't going to allow that to happen and thus Stronghammer ordered the melee squad to chase the remaining goblins down.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Two of the five goblins were able to outrun our soldiers, one was killed by bolts and one goblin was slaughtered where it stood. As our soldiers were engaging the last remaining goblin we discovered that all that fleeing was just a trap. With a blink of an eye our soldiers were surrounded by another squad of goblins, ready to slaughter our surprised dwarves.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

What goblins didn't know that cornered dwarf can be very dangerous, much more dangerous than anything they have encountered ever before. The slaughter was nearly absolute, only three goblins of the last group were able to escape. That means only five goblins out of twenty-seven survived the battle. And our troop? Not a single scratch! Although I think I saw one dwarf to be stunned momentarily by the hammer of one goblin, but even that was just minor inconvenience.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Strange thing is, after the battle was over we discovered single drow corpse from western entrance. How did that get there? Were the drows trying to infiltrate our fortress while we were fighting against goblins? Do they work with goblins? There are no answers, just questions. But I'm certain that we must be more vigilant in the future.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

22nd of Galena, year 104

At this date, three days after our mighty warriors rebelled the goblin ambush attempt, Stronghammer has decided to reward two of our great warriors, Rar and Tombvisions, ceremonial title to honor their actions during the fight. Hereby Rar shall be known as "Wheelsfair the Blocks of Sieging" and Tombvisions shall be known as "the Tenacious Crystal".

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

23rd of Galena, year 104

It seems like one goblin thief decided to try his luck during the general chaos which always occurs after a great battle.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It was unfortunate for the filthy bugger that he was spotted by our soldiers, and was basically surrounded without any hope for survival.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

25th of Galena, year 104

I knew it was no coincident that we found that drow body after the battle. Apparently they have been plotting to infiltrate our fortress, perhaps in hopes to get some adamantine we have mined. I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case, as there has been no sightings of drows before.

So, back to the subject, we spotted drow assassin near the last line of traps. After being spotted the drow decided to rush toward the exit, and the straight to south. Unfortunately our soldiers were nowhere close enough to catch the dark skinned elf, and thus it was able to escape.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I'm sure Stronghammer would have been delighted to do some interrogation if we had been able to capture it alive. Oh well, I think we should stick with the goblin prisoners we have, I hope we can get something out of them before execution.

Thanks!

I sure will keep on writing this story, though can't promise many updates during this week. Golf competition (yes, I actually play golf...  :o ;D), six night shifts at work and attempt of finally getting new update to the mod are taking more or less all the time I spend awake. But I try to find a moment to actually play DFA a bit so that I can write a new update at some point.

17th of Limestone, year 104

One dwarf has went moody again. This dwarf required a leather workshop to be built, and as soon as one was constructed she claimed it, nearly throwing the dwarf who was making the final adjustments out.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

After she had claimed the workshop she begun collecting the materials she would need in her project. Among the materials were some goblin leather, wild dog leather, stone, one rough gem, some wood and one bar of rune iron. After she had finished collecting the materials she begun to work, and doesn't let anyone inside.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

18th of Limestone, year 104

Our stocks of adamantine threads are growing, and it's finally the time to begin producing some bars from those.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Soon we should be able to produce some equipment for military from it, and even though we haven't been mining any more lately there are still dozens of ores waiting in the storage for processing.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Our bookkeeper told me that there should be far more than we need to give full squad of ten soldiers a full set of armor and battle axe made from the precious blue metal, so no more should be needed for now. As it was told in the historical books back in the mountain home there are risks when adamantine is being mined. Rumors say that such vein could lead to the world where even Armok himself would feel insecure. It's wise to heed such warnings and not to mine any more than we really need.

22nd of Limestone, year 104

Another goblin snatcher was spotted outside. Several of our prisoners confirmed it, though none of the soldiers nor personnel were able to see it. Apparently, basing on the tales, it ran northeast and was never seen again.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Something else happened here as well; the female dwarf who went moody some time ago came out from the leather workshop. She had produced leather right mitten from wild dog hide. Yes, only one mitten. Nobody knows who would need only one glove, perhaps someone who has lost his or her left hand? Nevertheless, the mitten was well crafted and it's full of decorations. The most notable decorations were the image of Heldwails the alunite earring, made with wild dog leather, picture of our first queen, made from goblin bone. The image of the queen honors her ascension to the position of monarch. That date also has become the first day of new calendar, so the ascension took place in year 1.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

26th of Limestone, year 104

Even though we have more than enough rocks everywhere around us Stronghammer insisted that we should establish clay industry to produce clay blocks. He wants that the rocks should be used to more important things, like crafts and such. As our sources of clay are practically infinite it makes a reason to use that as construction material.

So, the industrial area for clay has been finished as extension for our metal industry, with several kilns dedicated to collect clay and few magma powered kilns to turn all that clay to blocks. There is also a huge storage area for all the clay our prisoners will collect to ensure that our magma kilns won't run out of material too easily.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

4th of Sandstone, year 104

The personal quarters for our tax collector hasn't been finished yet, though only things that are missing are the furniture, smoothing and engraving. While waiting for the rooms he decided to make his first mandate; three tin items. Unfortunately we don't have any tin nor any ore for that. That means there is no way to complete this mandate, unless the caravan from mountain home brings some.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

While speaking of mandates the one issued by Stronghammer has yet to been fulfilled. The first large gem has been produced but our jeweler hasn't been able to do that again, even though he has used dozen or so rough gems in the process. Yorilda, one of our priestess, has stated her concerns about wasting the rough gems for such foolish thing when those could be used to produce sacred stones in temples, another thing she complains we are missing. I must confess that I agree with her, why should we waste our limited stocks of rough gems just to produce few large gems when those could be used more efficiently? But it's Stronghammer's demand and as long he is our mayor and leader we can't but obey.

12th of Timber, year 104

The deadline of Stronghammer's mandate has ended, and thus our history received the first crime. The dwarf to be punished is one of our woodcutters, which is a bit strange as he has no skills related to jewelry and gem cutting. When I asked Stronghammer's reasons to choose this specific prisoner he just said that "It doesn't matter who is punished as long as someone is. Making an example is far more important than the details of who was actually guilty."

The actual punishment is from the lowest end, just twenty-six days in jail. That's not as bad when compared to other possibility, the beating. On the other hand, serving time in jail may also be fatal, as thirsty and hungry is everyday quest in dwarven jail. This is because the one jailed is depending on the mercy and kindness of other dwarves for getting food and water, alcohol is strictly forbidden. So, if nobody brings any water or food you can always die in jail.

16th of Limestone, year 104

All the training has made Rar's skills in using axe legendary.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It's a good thing as we suspect we need his skills sooner or later, most probably soon than later.

24th of Timber, year 104

The interrogation of goblin prisoners has not yielded anything new to us so Stronghammer ordered several of them to be executed by our archers. Four goblins were moved in cages to the execution platform and the cages were linked to the lever in dining hall.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

When everything was set and four of the five archers were stationed at the bridge the lever was pulled and the poor goblins were released.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Those filthy buggers didn't stand a chance, as there was no escape, and thus they fell to the bolts of our archer squad.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The execution was meant to have several effects. First of all it would free four cages for better use, as there are no laws that demands us to keep our prisoners alive if we don't want to. And we definitely don't. Secondly Stronghammer hopes that the fate of their comrades would loosen up the tongues of other goblins. Perhaps they are now more willing to reveal their plans and whether they work with drows or not?

25th of Timber, year 104

It was time for annual caravan from mountain home. No tin bars as we hoped, but lots of wood and cloth along with few random bars of metal. We had to give lots of crafts for traders, but that doesn't concern us much as the goblins have been quite good source for those.

Next it was time for Stronghammer to meet the liaison.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Everybody was expecting the promotion to barony, but the liaison had different news. Apparently the King was unsatisfied with the profit of previous caravan, and thus our fortress can't be promoted to barony yet. Stronghammer was furious, there had been no mentions of trading profits when they negotiated about the situation last year.

"We know this fortress is wealthy, but you haven't proven that to caravans yet."

Stronghammer stared the liaison in disbelief, shouting his answer. "But you didn't mention anything about such thing! If we had known there were such stupid requirements we would have given them better profit!"

"You should have known, after all it's a tradition in our kingdom."

Stronghammer calmed a bit, lowering his voice. "So, if you give better margin to the caravan this year, would that change things?"

"Perhaps, but not this year. We consider things on yearly basis, so if you give better deal to caravan this year then the promotion may take place next year. This year, not a chance."

"Fine! I see the traders again before they leave and make sure they bring huge profit to the King. But you better be sure that it affects the decision next year!"

"Can't promise anything as it's up to the King if he sees this place worthy to become barony."

After the heated discussion the two dwarves went on negotiating about the goods next caravan should bring. As usual we requested more wood and other necessary supplies as well as some tin to satisfy the demands of our tax collector.

Next Stronghammer headed back to trading depot, bought some pig tail seeds and cages and paid over ten thousand bucks from those. The bookkeeper was unhappy about it as the things he bought were worth of less than one thousand bucks. I think Stronghammer is quite desperate to make this fortress barony.

16th of Moonstone, year 104

Finally every personnel, priest and guard has own sleeping chamber.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

No prisoner has personal chamber yet as the tower is still under construction. But that is secondary objective for us, the important thing is that we who run this place have a place to close our eyes in peace.

6th of Opal, year 104

The second floor of the tower has been finished and the workers are moving to third floor as I write this. Our estimations are that to house the current population we need at least seven floors completed.

On other news we have had a small streak of births here lately. Three new kids have been born, one of them was considered to be drafted to guards when he is old enough. That means our miners must dig out new room for him, which shouldn't take long.

7th of Opal, year 104

Yorilda, one of our priestess, demanded a meeting with Stronghammer today. She stated her concerns about the fact that we have no place where they could properly worship Armok and thus such place should be built immediately. When Stronghammer asked for details of such place she said that it should be built above the magma crater and that the walls must be made from iron and floors from gold. The iron is not big problem to us since we have more than enough of it but gold is another thing. So, to satisfy the demands of priesthood Stronghammer ordered the gold ore vein at the base of the mountain to be mined, as well as the vein found near the first cavern. Hopefully those veins provide enough ore to make the construction possible.

26th of Opal, year 104

The deadline of tax collector's mandate has ended without success, and so it was time have another punishment given. Strangely enough this time the dwarf who was chosen is one of our guards, which makes it strange indeed. I asked the tax collector the reasons why no prisoner was chosen, but he didn't give me any proper answer. The punishment is fifty days in jail, which fortunately shouldn't be a big thing.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

All the gold ore at the surface level has been mined, and so the construction of grand monastery can begun. Our furnace operators are working hard to turn all the ore to bars, which then will be used in construction.

16th of Obsidian, year 104

Two vampire thieves were spotted at the western entrance.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Neither one managed to escape as the traps slaughtered them. It seems that every group of scumbags are now interested about our fortress, most probably due the adamantine and general wealth we have managed to produce. Well, aside from few scared prisoners, no harm was caused by either vampire, so we can safely return to our daily routines.

Poem I. The Rise

Thy come a long distance
to found a Prison.
Thy place was Evercage
to jail all dwarves.

The Key of Walls had said:
'Dig, you lazy dwarves, for this will be your prison!'
and the dwarves dug, dug and dug.
Until, one of their dwarves, said:
'We should make a wall around the entrance, for we not know what we face.'
and so, they had built the wall.

And so, a place that was supposed to be a Prison, was starting to become a Fortress.

Re: Evercage, the dwarven prison [Dwarf Fortress Advanced v. 0.3.6 COMMUNITY]
« Reply #118 on: August 01, 2011, 04:35:18 am »

Interlude 1

Okay, before starting a new chapter, I think it's time to check how all the claimed dwarves fare. The order is from the 'u'nit list of the game.

Karakzon

Karakzon can be considered the head miner of Evercage. When something needs to be mined he is the one who will be called out first.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

All the work in mines has made him quite strong and he enjoys all the small things in his life, like seeing a great bed or talking to a friend.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The unfortunate thing is, even though Karakzon is very active and friendly, all the time he spends in mines has made him quite lonely. He was romantically involved to one of the guards but alas the guard in question died, leaving Karakzon to live his life alone with only few friends supporting him.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Niney

Niney, the master architect of the fortress, haven't had much of work except producing some loose furniture. That detail has changed since the construction of sleeping tower begun, a fact that has made Niney very happy.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

There hasn't been much of enjoyment for Niney in Evercage, not including the work he got recently. Nobody really understands how this clumsy, weak and quick to tire dwarf can perform such a huge and complex tasks required in his art. But the truth is that when Niney starts working with rock the result is usually something magnificent, which has also gained him a bit of trust among the personnels and guards.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Even though he hasn't had much of work in Evercage Niney hasn't gained many friends, just few of them. Most of his friends are from the early days of the fortress, including his lover.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Perhaps the lack of friends are caused by the ugly scars he has? After all, Niney was gravely injured during goblin assault at year 102. He survived, thanks to the doctors, but the scars in his stomach are terror for eyes, and thus it's possible that most of the dwarves who arrived the fortress after the incident shun as they don't know the tale behind the scars.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Lecktor

Lecktor is one of the newest prisoner in Evercage. His profession is furnace operating, even though he knows a bit about cooking. His crime was one of the worst a dwarf can commit, which is murder. Lecktor is considered as sociopath.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Lecktor loves art and is comfortable in social situations, even though he doesn't trust other easily. That's why almost nobody knows anything about him, as he has only one friend inside the fortress.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Metalhead

Metalhead belongs to the respected guild of smiths, being well respected among his co-workers due his skills in every field of metal forging.
During his life in Evercage Metalhead has also produced artifact, iron amulet called "The Fall of Crowns", which also happened to be the very first artifact created in the fortress.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

As he spends most of his time underground working in forges Metalhead has begun hating sun, which is only normal for dwarves. Most of his enjoyment comes from talking to his family, admiring fine work of art as well as spending time with his pet.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Speaking of family, Metalhead has wife, the dwarf called Bayar, and three sons. He also has a cat as pet, which is only understandable due his fondness towards those feline creatures. Besides the family and the cat Metalhead has no other friends, which may be explained by his striving for excellence.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Dohon

Dohon is the captain of the guard in Evercage. He hasn't seen much action in battle yet, mostly due lacking own squad, and thus his fighting skills are somewhat worse than other guards who are in active service. But this doesn't mean he has been totally unemployed because it's his responsibility to lock misbehaving dwarves to prison.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Dohon has known to take care of his prisoners, which is quite surprising as it normally doesn't fall to the captain to take care of that. On the other hand one can always say that his personality isn't perhaps the most fitting for captain of the guard, as Dohon is known to avoid crowded places and is often nervous. Nevertheless he has done good job so far, and nobody is complaining.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Perhaps it is because of his duty Dohon doesn't have any friends nor family. Or then it's because he really tries to avoid crowds. Nevertheless his only companion is his pet boar, which sides him all the time.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

ImBocaire

ImBocaire, the legendary farmer of the fortress, has known to be there from the very beginning. His solemn duty is to ensure that there is enough food and alcohol for everybody in Evercage, and during the long years his skills have grown quite much.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

As he has spent most of his time in the farm underground ImBocaire has grown to hate the sun, just like any real dwarf should do. The continuous work has also ensured that he has stayed skinny, which was originally caused by all the years he spent in the jail back in mountain home. But even though he is still very skinny it is the healthy kind, not malnourished kind of skinny.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

All the hard work ImBocaire has done has earned a bit of respect among other dwarves, especially among few of the original seven. It is also well known fact that he had some grudges with the former leader Keywalls, though nobody knows for sure why. Perhaps it was because of the behavior Keywalls showed towards the prisoners? It doesn't really matter much anymore though there have been few times when ImBocaire has been spotted dancing on the Keywalls' grave.

Bayar

Bayar belongs to the troublesome group of prisoners; she doesn't have assigned job while she is still helping here and there and is even leading a small squad of her own. The squad is called "The Sorcerous Whips", though commonly it's just called as "The Mob" squad. The interesting thing about the squad is that it's formed completely from prisoners and they are unarmed.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Why was Bayar made to lead the mob squad? Well, one thing could have been that she is quite disorganized. That feature is only a positive when speaking of leader of unorganized squad whose sole purpose is to wreak havoc. She is also somewhat immodest, so perhaps other prisoners follow her in battle more easily?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

As is known the mob squad was originally formed to slaughter the elves, especially the traders who ventured too close. Bayar is known to hate elves, so perhaps that was also a reason to appoint her in the leading position of the squad. Nevertheless during the years she has managed to kill only one elf, and that was during the year 103.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

As the leader of the mob Bayar has also gained some respect among others. This can be seen in the fact that she has several friends, husband and three children. All in all Bayar is one of the most respected dwarf among the prisoners, though the guards still keep close eye on her just in case.

Yorilda

Yorilda is one of the priestess of Armok and lately she has known to act as mouthpiece of the holy dwarves. Perhaps this is because she is very friendly and is able to do the negotiations with greater success? She doesn't also rush on with things and thus her decisions are usually better formed.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

As she is the mouthpiece of the clergy she hasn't had enough time to actually make many friends. In fact she has only one friend, though she knows nearly everybody in Evercage. But only one dwarf can be truly considered as her friend.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Stronghammer

Here is a interesting dwarf. Stronghammer is the mayor of the Evercage, as well as the broker and manager. He was also the bookkeeper at one point but in the end he delegated that work to others, which is only a good thing as he would not have had enough time to actually carry out all those jobs properly.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Which traits then had helped him to gain the position of mayor? Most probably his calmness, intellectual powers, friendliness and ability to handle stress. On the other hand he doesn't trust others easily and he rather intimidate them than compromising. It has also been proven that, as the mayor is allowed to make mandates, Stronghammer fondness to certain things may be problematic. For example he like rune bronze and large gems, the mandate for large gems has already caused one dwarf to become chained in the jail.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Perhaps it's because of his position or because he like intimidate others Stronghammer doesn't have any friends inside Evercage. Of course, due his duty, he knows more or less everybody.

Alaric "The Mad"

Alaric, also knows as "The Mad", is the leader of smiths in Evercage. Usually such position is given to one of the workers, but as Alaric's family is known for superior quality of items she was was given the chance to adopt the position.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Alaric moved to Evercage due some tragic accident that killed her whole family. Perhaps that is why she is a bit reserved, as she doesn't want to get friends too easily in fear of loosing them as well. Due the tragic she also has hardened herself and thus doesn't easily get moved to pity.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Ahra

Ahra is the leader of the archer squad called "Gravel of Autonomy". He is very talented in what he does, which is guard the entrance and shoot bolts towards anything that he thinks as threat.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

During his time in military he has gained lot of respect, mostly due the kills he has made. Unfortunately, as the law requires five, he doesn't yet have enough notable kills to earn a special title, but it will only be a matter of time before he does that. After all he is missing just one kill, as he already has two elves and two goblins in his kill list.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The kills are not the only thing he has done to earn the respect. After all he was badly injured in a fight against goblins ambush as he and Yegg decided to rush towards the invaders for melee combat instead of wasting time and gather more bolts. Yegg died, as well as the leader of the fortress Keywalls, and Ahra was so badly injured that nobody actually believed he would get out from hospital alive. But there he is, leading his squad, fully capable of launching deadly bolts towards anything that gets too close.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The unfortunate battle against the goblins has hardened Ahra so much that he can handle quite much today. He is also rarely discouraged, perhaps he thinks himself as immortal? Nobody knows but he really takes his job of guarding the entrance seriously, so seriously that tends to get angry when his shift at the walls ends and he someone else comes to replace him. Perhaps he feels that he failed during that tragic battle when Yegg and Keywalls died, and is now trying to compensate it?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Even though being hardened is a good trait for a soldier it doesn't go well with making new friends. Perhaps this is why Ahra has only two real friend, both of them actually belonging to his squad.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Rar

Rar, the militia commander, is considered as the hero of Evercage. His skills with axe are legendary and during his career in military he has killed numerous beings, enough to earn him the title "Wheelsfair the Block of Sieging".

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

As true soldier Rar has also experienced the wounds. His right ankle was damaged in battle and it has never healed completely. Once it was even close to cause his death but luckily his comrade was able to rescue him from the goblins.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Just like Ahra Rar has been hardened during all the battles he has experienced. The damaged right ankle has also taught him to not take any risks unless necessary. Perhaps, even though nearly everybody considers him as hero, Rar has never gained any friends inside the fortress. Another reason may be that he spends more or less every hour he is awake training, excluding the moments he is either drinking or eating.

You know, they could teach maths like this at school. "There are 105 dwarves in a settlement. A goblin invasion appears and 67 die. Then a migrant wave..."

Poem I.

Until the First Sadness had begun.

*applauds*  8)

But what are you referring at with the "First Sadness"?

The first ambush, which killed Keywalls. :P
