So, I've seen burningpet around in a couple of the different threads, and he was last active today, as of this posting.

Combine that with something I found on his forum for Towns:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

With all the hardcore programmers on B12, and all the support that was given previously, why didn't he post that here? It went nowhere on his own forums, and he never mentioned it here at all. Towns probably wouldn't have stalled as badly (or outright died, as no one seems to be upkeeping it at the moment,) if they were really serious about canvassing for programmers.
It might be because you don't bring friends into business, weren't much friends but say for instance your project fails and burned through cash it hurts your image and feel like you lost trust. Take for example Lord Dullard.

We were supposed to come with an announcement already. as to why didn't we, its because i am waiting for xavi to make it, as he should.

We didn't hire bluesteel, he did submit himself for the job, though.

I never posted for the job here, because frankly, i completely forgot about bay12 when i started to spread the hiring posts all over (perhaps i didn't make the connection of these forums and programmers or the connection between bay12 and business posts, even though, ironically, we all met here), and when ragnar mentioned to me about posting here, the very next evening i received a sudden flood of resumes which some of them were very promising and of which one was eventually selected.

Fair enough. Also, I never heard anything about Lord Dullard working on a project. Guess I'll have to go find it.

This is hardly shocking. Towns was a disaster for years. Poor Florian.

Me and my friend enjoyed towns. It got ruined, personally, for us after they nerfed digging.

We knew how to do it after learning, but the old system was so much better for us. Made it no fun for both of us.

Only did it cause creator hated underground homes. I remember him saying he wanted no underground building.

Makes me wonder if the guys would be willing to sell/license the game/source code and I could (or get someone to) fix it up and finish it off or something.

It's sad because it was fun to play and wasn't far off being an fantastic game.

Yeah, it is all pretty disappointing. The last time I really played was when he added that artifact that kept track of how many times people have found it. After that... I am not sure if there have been any updates.

Early access...

Give the developer all the money before he or she has made the game so he or she has literally zero motivation to actually develop it.

What a great system... Said no-one ever.

More like give them money now so they can continue to develop it full time and don't have to do a shitty 9-5 job.

Alas, there's a black sheep in every flock :)

This is the very reason that I refuse to fund anything Early Access (excluding minecraft, because it was still a new system back then).

I suppose they could also have gone full minecraft and kind-of support modding. Modders can work wonders with sales due to PR and also by giving people some sense that the community is actively developing for it even if the developers aren't.

I thought Town's never did the early access thing?  I seem to remember there being some controversy that it was released in a beta-like state.

It did. I bought it early alpha. It was way better then than at release, gameplay and bugwise. Which is kinda funny.

Xavi has been contacted by several studios, including one who suppose to be pretty well known, so that option exists.

I suggest you approach him as well. i would love seeing you take it rather than those studios.

Early Access is a strong factor in allowing brilliant games to come to realization and few bad examples doesn't make for the entire business model. i still happily buy into early access games, even if the first one i ever bought greatly disappointed me (Survivors of Ragnarok). this system is not without its inherent faults, but its benefits greatly surpass any traditional model.

Also, Towns is extremely moddable. a lot of the mechanics are ones i implemented through the existing modding system, so while it could still be greatly expanded, i think it still has room for interesting mods.
