For towns it makes sense how it is, I was just going off topic on crafting games (which tend to be player perspective).
In fact making it too complicated in this sort of game would just get into a pain of micromanagement.

Ok so just to clarify i tested every single key from the 20 of 10 days ago, waiting the steam count down (you can only try fives keys then have to wait something like 30 min before you can try five more). Not really a surprise they're all taken but next time guys please post which key is taken as you take it, or at least post you took one (and say thanks while you're at it?) so us late arrivers can count how many are gone and won't get our hopes up for nothing :p

cheers :)

and towns is great for what i tried of it :), it really is a good thing we see more good games of the df genre :D

Yup, sorry if it wasn't clear, but I was just following the same off topic direction with SoR, then tried to get back on topic.

I completely agree about Towns. I like how it is right now, as far as crafting goes, and would prefer it actually stay with somewhat generic stuff: makes it easier for me and my OCD to get along. I've had enough nightmares due to DF's multicolored walls/rooms.

Some new info:

Quote
Hey old and new townies, i am Ben, part of the duo behind Towns. nice to meet ya all newcomers!

I was away at a long vacation that was planned long time ago during the release, so there was a severe lack of communication from us.

Well, lets fix that, shall we?

So, the first thing we are doing is implementing a method that will allow new patches to be save game compatibles. this may sound small and trivial, yet it proved tricky and essential to our progress.

After we solve this nagging issue, we will start fixing and improving critical stuff that floated by the release.

We will enable interacting with water, such as blocking and controlling it, implement real terraforming, have heroes trade loot and form parties, have them also pay rent but also make soldiers have a salary, so the economy is going to be a bit more complex. We plan to improve the hauling issues and have a way to control where your townies can or cant go to. implement the long by now promised fear feature that will determine whether a townie fight or flight.

We will improve how happiness is calculated. animate all living things in the world, as well the workshops. have the option to rotate items and the camera and implement a zoom function, even if just for taking screenshots.

We also have a new feature planned that will allow player to exprience other player built towns in an interesting way:
A player can choose to "bury" his town, or, it will be buried automatically if all of his citizens die. that buried town will drop a below surface and when a new player starts a game, that town will be a part of the newly generated dungeon.
Imagine a map with few towns buried one on top of each other, this will surely make the dungeons much more interesting to explore.

There are many thing we need to improve and there are even more many things we want to add, so Towns is definitely not dead and you can all expect great things in the near future.

Quote
Hey guys, to answer some questions that popped up:

The bury system - the way we envision it, the whole town would go down a level or two, and the remaining blocks would be covered with terrain, so a suspicious looking mountain could prove to be an ancient town.

Regarding map size in terms of width - sadly, it will not be possible to make the maps bigger, however, smaller could be an interesting option.

Heros and control - As i said, although i loved majesty and majesty 2 to death, i was always disappointed that i had to "control" them, however, a quest system is in plan. how it will work is probably as to mimik quests from RPG's. kill 10 spiders, retrieve X items. As for escorting, it can be a viable option for the soldiers, not the heroes. seems more fitting to me.

Also,Heroes already try and help townies, but it depends on their morale level, sir punchwood and the knight has the highest morale chance. the barbarian and the thief are less likely to help out.

An alarm system that makes all townies run to safety was suggested already and frankly, i like it. we can already do it to an extent by voodoo scripting, but we prefer to do it properly so it will have to wait just a bit.

Also, the next patch will see a new hero, called the herbalist who is dependent on various plants that come to his aid.

Regarding ETA - Well, there is a high chance we might release the save game compatible version along with visual improvements, balancing and the new hero/monster/animal in this month, but all the features i listed will be in other near future patches.

As for far future - well, the skies are the limit so feel free to continue giving great ideas and feedback, and yes, also the bad feedback which prove sometimes to be even more important.

How does one mine? When I try to do it, I just get the equivalent of channeling the surface in DF.

Hello all, we have just released Towns v9 which mainly dealt with technical under the hood issues, fixing lag on bigger towns, adding proper save/load system and altered the way wheat production is handled.

In addition we have set it so animals must be fed now so spamming meat tasks is harder now as it require wheat.

The changes are as follow:
- Savegames
- From now on all the new builds will be savegame compatible with v9.
- Now you can manage multiple saves per map.
- WARNING: Towns v9 BREAKS the compatibility with older savegames. You won't be able to load v8a games on v9.

- Performance
- Big improvement on the performance, now the lag peaks will be unnoticeable on bigger towns.
- Improvement in the memory management of the game.

- Keybindings
- Now you will be able to configure the shortcuts.
- Added shortcuts to the bottom menu.

- Gameplay
- Farm animals now need food to stay alive.
- Military items now have a small chance to have prefix/suffix when manufactured by townies.
- Flour is now managed from the production panel.

- Graphics
- New isometric graphics for the froggies and yetis.
- New graphic for the new mill item.
