The only way I've discovered that my villagers don't all die horribly in some retarded fashion (like, walking one by one to the nearest monster) is to outfit every single one of them in full iron armor and weapon.

Even then, if one villager encounters a group, they'll NEVER back off even after they've killed 90% of them and have like 100 Hp left.

there is a major update on the horizon that will change some major parts of the game. Unfortunately, until they streamline food production I think I can't play the game as the balance is broken when your Townies spend the majority of game time on food.

Hey guys, we have just released towns 0.50, where you can finally build multi level buildings amd mine into the mountains. we have also slightly rebalanced the food/sleep timers for more freedom of constructing without killing the balance.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

You can check out the news post here:
http://www.townsgame.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=3847

and check out a mini guide on how to build in the new system here:
http://www.townsgame.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=3848

Sadly, due to personal circumstances we were not able to implement all what we wanted in this build, so the flying sharks, the floating islands and the economy will have to wait for the new version which should take us less time than what 0.50 took us with the engine change.

Ok, I've tried the lastest version, and I have a critique:

There doesn't seem to be a mine level anymore. I mean, there is, but not really. Since now you have layers, and digging and mining is basically the same (you remove a block from a layer, making a hole above) there is nowhere to make basements. (there's no "ceiling" or "floor", just the block)

So, now you have the first layer (the surface), one dirt layer (you can't mine here because you end up making canals on the surface, unless under a mountain), one "rock" layer (where you could mine, except it's full of "chasms" which are actually the corridors of the level below it), and the first dungeon level.

So, the level where you would normally put mines/basements is full of holes, and you can't even see them or what's inside them until you've made a ladder to the actual dungeon and mapped that part.

Sorry for the late reply, i didn't see it.

Well, you are correct, a lot of players have asked for an additional layer between the surface and the spiders layers to build basements and such. we will probably add that layer,  for mass room construction you can now just mine into a mountain. as for basements, my recently used town design is such that i build small houses for each workshop, place the workshop on the second floor and the stockpile/barrels on the first.

Have you considered doing floors DF style? That would mean you don't have to have a whole unused layer.

Huh, I can't connect to the website. A quick check says it's only for me.

That would be great, and i agree that basements aren't really necessary with multi story houses, that was mostly a side comment, my real issue is wanting to mine to find iron veins, its really hard without either stumbling on the spider corridors or turning the top into a giant terrarium :D

I just let My heroes find 'em in the spider's level. that said, since 0.50b, there is a good chance you could find the top of a vein on the surface.
