Kf3 might be more practical but I like the look of C3. Though I'm curious about F4, maybe I'm a little short sited but wouldn't that just hand black a free pawn and control over your right flank?

In my limited experience, sacrificing a pawn to get the enemy pawn outside of the middle two ranks, and gaining a two pwn centre is favorable despite its seeming disadvantage of the lost pawn. I could be wrong here but that was the logic i think.

*What he said before me.

**We have a close poll here, if no one comes and tips the balance by the end of today, I will break the tie and make a choice!

I dont like that at all, the bishop would be easily driven back by a pawn advance, and then wed loose the initiative :(

Promote a Pawn, but don't sacrifice them, F4 only drags their pawn away from the center at the cost of your own, this is a wasted move...

It makes me wonder though who voted for f4 since hardly anybody here actually said they'd like it.

A vote for F4, and a justification: if black captures, he has spent a move to gain material at the expense of his centre. Material is not everything, one also has to consider central control, king safety and pawn structure amongst other things.

I agree with this guy, this was my thoughts for proposing F4 in the first place.

Queen's gambit is more popular, but there have been several grandmasters that used the King's gambit effectively. So it's not as horrible a move as, say, opening with a3.

Bascially the reasoning as I understand for F4 is that it is a weak move, but that overall it is easier to take care of an opponent who takes advantage of it.

Unfashionable perhaps, but not really a weak move. F4 is gambit play, sacrificing material for an improved position. Chess is all about exchanging one type of advantage for another.
Incidentally, the best reply for black would seem to be to accept the gambit with exf4.

That's because the King's gambit is the weaker of the royal gambits (IIRC at least)
